Pattern: American Flag Pillow

I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with Tunisian Crochet. One of my favorite stitches to use is the knit stitch. I absolutely love how it looks while incorporating color work! I used Bernat Maker Outdoor for this project and the yarn is amazing let me tell ya!! If you haven’t tried it yet, definitely give it a go! If you have never done Tunisian crochet, don’t worry!! I have video help included! Just click the video link below and it will take you to my youtube channel.

Be sure to follow and tag me on Instagram with your finished pillows so I can see!

Materials:

Notes:

  • Follow my VIDEO TUTORIALS for visual help.
  • 1 Row in the graph counts as both the forward pass and return pass for each row in the pattern.
  • Each forward pass ends with an edge st.
  • Each return pass begins with a Ch 1.
  • You will be working in the second Ch from the hook in each row.
  • You will NOT be turning your work after each row. The correct side of your work is always facing you.

Stitches and Terms Used:

Knit Stitch- *Insert hook into indicated St, pull up a loop* repeat across.

Bind Off-  *Insert hook into indicated St, YO, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.* Repeat across

Return Pass- Ch 1. *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook* Repeat across row until you have 1 loop left on hook. The return pass is made after every row “forward pass”.

Edge St- The edge stitch will be made just as a normal tunisian knit stitch. The only difference is, you will stick the hook under both vertical bars on the end instead of just the top vertical bar. This creates a cleaner stitch.

Finished Size: 16”wide by 11” tall

Gauge: 4” square= 10 knit stitches by 11 rows

Pattern:

Ch 40

Row 1 (foundation row): Starting at the bottom right corner of the graph- Starting in the second Ch from the hook, insert hook into back “bump” and pull up a loop. Repeat in each Ch across. (40 loops on hook.) Return pass- Ch 1. *YO, pull through 2 loops.* repeat across row until you have 1 loop left on hook.

Rows 2-28: Continue following the graph and its color changes using the knit stitch. Remember, each forward pass ends with an edge stitch.

Row 29: Bind off.

Back Panel: Repeat the same amount of stitches and rows to create the back panel, minus the color changes.

Stars: Using your yarn needle and white yarn, add stars to the blue square. I embroidered french knots. You could also stitch “X’s” or crochet small stars and sew them on.

Sew Panels Together:

Place your panels wrong side together. With the front panel facing up, join yarn with a Sl St to the upper right corner. Ch 1. Working through both the front and back panel, *make 1 Sc in each St across. When you reach the corner, work 3 Sc into the same St.* Repeat around until you reach the first St, Join with a Sl St. Tie off. Stuff your pillow before finishing the last row.
