Pattern: Chain-Link Crochet Beanie

It’s a new year which means a bunch of new free patterns on the blog! I have a lot of fun stuff in the works for you all and to start it off i’m posting this super chunky beanie! Now, this beanie is a tiny bit different because i’m using a stitch that’s not technically a real stitch, I guess you could say. You’ve heard of the Center single crochet or “waistcoat” stitch right? well this uses that stitch except it’s “extended”. I’ve just added one more yarn over in the stitch. Below are a couple of video tutorials for you to get a visual. I promise its super easy!

Don’t forget to PIN the beanie and tag me on Instagram with your makes! 🙂

Materials:

  • Super Bulky (6) Yarn. Pattern uses Lion Brand Hometown USA. 130 yards needed for adult size.
  • 9.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • PomPom (optional)

Notes:

  • This beanie is made from the bottom up.
  • The main portion of the beanie is made using the “extended center single crochet stitch” or the “extended waistcoat stitch.” It is just like the normal waistcoat St, but with an extra “ch” in the St. (View videos below)
  • Hold your hook and yarn with a loose tension. If you do this stitch too tight it will be difficult to insert your hook.
  • You can easily adjust the size of this hat. For a larger hat, add more rows to the brim. For a smaller hat, have less rows. When moving on to the base of the hat add more stitches in the first round for a larger hat and less for a smaller. Specific St count is not important. However, you will have to adjust your decrease rounds accordingly.

Finished Sizing:

Pattern:

Ch 15

Row 1: 1 Sl St in second Ch from hook and each Ch across. Turn. (14 Sl St)

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a St). 1 Sl St (BLO) in each St across. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until your brim reaches approximately 16” un-stretched. Mine ended up with 55 rows.

Fold your brim in half and Sl St the first and last row together. Turn your work correct side out, so that the seam is on the inside of your hat. You will want to make sure the little “V’s” on your brim aren’t upside down. These make it look “knit.”

You will now be working in conutinuous rounds, along the top of your brim.

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as St). Work 36 Sc evenly around the brim of your hat. Do not join, instead use a St marker to keep your place. (36 Ecsc)

Rounds 2-10: 1 Ecsc in each St around.

Round 11: *7 Ecsc, Esc2tog* Repeat around. (32 Ecsc)

Round 12: *6 Ecsc, Esc2tog* Repeat around. (28 Ecsc)

Round 13: *5 Ecsc, Ecsc2tog* Repeat around. (24 Ecsc)

Round 14: *4 Ecsc, Ecsc2tog* Repeat around. (20 Ecsc)

Round 15: *3 Ecsc, Ecsc2tog* Repeat around. (16 Ecsc)

Round 16: *2 Ecsc, Ecsc2tog* Repeat around. (12 Ecsc)

Round 17: *1 Ecsc, Ecsc2tog* Repeat around. (8 Ecsc)

Tie off, leaving a long tail to close.

Finish Up:

Using a yarn needle, weave your tail in and out of the outer loops of the last 8 stitches. Pull tight to close.

Using the same tail sew on pompom.

I hope you guys enjoyed this quick pattern! I can’t wait to see what yours looks like! 🙂
