The Stony Shore Cardigan Crochet Pattern

The Stony Shore Cardigan Crochet Pattern is here! I’ve been wanting to make something with this stitch for a long time and I’m glad I finally did it! I also knew immediately I would be doing a loose balloon style sleeve. I actually attempted it on my Sunset Bomber but it just didn’t go with the style. I’m sooooo happy that it worked out that way because they look AMAZING on this cardigan.

I’ve been posting sneak peeks of this sweater on TikTok and Instagram. The amount of crocheters that told me they couldn’t wait for this pattern was kind of insane. I can’t even begin to tell you all how much I appreciate the love and support on this design. It’s also a bit nerve wracking because I hope it lives up to the hype. I just want you all to love it as much as I do. Even my husband said this was his favorite sweater of mine and he is my toughest critic when it comes to crochet!! lol.

The Stony Shore Cardigan Crochet Pattern is worked in separate panels from the bottom up and is beginner friendly. Once you get the bead stitch nailed down it’s a breeze to make. You will alternate bead stitch rows and double crochet rows throughout. You can easily make your sweater longer or shorter by adding/taking away rows in multiples of 2 before tying off. Same with the sleeves!

Rows 12-35(35, 35, 37, 37, 39, 39, 41, 41): Repeat Rows 2 & 3.

Tie off, leave a long tail for sewing last row to back panel.

Sleeves (make 2)-

Row 1: 10 Fsc, turn. (10 Sc)

Rows 2-27(28, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34): Ch 1, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across, turn.

Do not turn after your last row. We will now be working Row 1 of the main body of the panel into the ends of the ribbing rows.

Row 1: Work 2 Sc into the end of each row across, turn. 54(56, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68 Sc) (Note- your sleeve is going to look wavy and crazy for the first several rows! Don’t worry, it’s supposed to!)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc here and throughout), *1 Dc in next, **YO, insert hook from front to back around the post of the most recent Dc, YO, pull up loop** repeat from ** to ** 2 more times (7 loops on hook), YO, pull through first 6 loops, YO pull through final 2 loops, Sk next St*, repeat from * to * across row, 1 Dc in final St. (26(27, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33) beads)

Row 3: Ch 3, 1 Dc in each St across, turn. (54(56, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68) Dc)

Rows 4-21(21, 21, 21, 21, 19, 19, 19, 19): Repeat Rows 2 & 3.

Tie off, leave a long tail for sewing last row to front/back panels. Note- This is an oversized drop-sleeve style cardigan. The wider the front/back panels are, the shorter the sleeve needs to be because they join further down your bicep. That’s why the smaller sizes have more rows than the larger. You an easily adjust your sleeve length by adding or taking away rows in multiples of 2.

Pockets (make 2)-

Row 1: 18 Fdc, turn. (18 Dc)(Note- alternatively you can Ch 20, work 1 Dc in the 3rd Ch from the hook and each across for 18 Dc)

Rows 2-10: Ch 2 (does not count), 1 Dc in each St across, turn.

Don’t forget to turn after your last row. We will now be working 1 round of trim around the perimeter of the pocket.

Round 1: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St across top of pocket, when you reach the last St of the row, work 3 Sc into it, continue down side of pocket working Sc Sts into the sides of the rows (approximately 2 Sc per row), when you reach the corner St at the bottom work 3 Sc into it, work 1 Sc into each St along the bottom, when you reach the last St of the row work 3 Sc into it, Sc up the second side, work 2 more Sc into the same spot as your first Sc made. Sl St to your first St and tie off. (Note- exact St count is not crucial here.)

Join Panels-

Place your front and back panels together RS facing.

Using your preferred seaming method attach the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders (I used my hook and slip stitched across). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches.

Next, using the same joining process as above, we will be attaching the sleeves to the cardigan. Make sure the center of the sleeve is aligned with the shoulder seam. Be sure to check that your sleeves are even on both the front and back panel as you go. It is helpful to use SM’s here to keep your sleeve in place as you join.

Finally, fold your cardigan so that the back and front panels are on top of each other, RS facing. Seam from the cuffs to the underarm and down the side of the cardigan.

Join Pockets-
Now, you will be sewing your pockets to the inside of the front panels using a sewing needle. Place your pocket on the WS (inside) of the cardigan. Line it up so that the top of the pocket is aligned with the Ch 18 in row 11. You will be sewing the top of the pocket to the Ch 18. Continue sewing down the side of the pocket, across the bottom and back up the second side. I recommend using SM’s to hold your pocket in place. Make sure you don’t stick your needle all the way through to the front so that the seam is not visible on the outside. Don’t tug your stitches too tight. Be sure to view the video tutorial if you need a visual on how to sew the pocket. Tie off and repeat on other side.

Add Trim-
With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom corner of the left panel (right panel when worn).
Row 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the front panel (approximately 2 Sc per row), across the back neckline and down the side of the second front panel, turn. Exact St count is not crucial here, just try to keep your stitches even.
Rows 2 & 3: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St across, turn.
Tie off.

Weave in all ends and steam block cardigan if desired.
