The Second Star Lace Tee Crochet Pattern

The Second Star Lace Tee crochet pattern carries a deeper meaning for me. It was created during a really difficult time in my life while I was caring for and saying goodbye to my sweet senior yorkie, Peter, who was my constant companion. He was gentle, loving, and happiest when he was held close like a baby, my little shadow through everything. Naming this piece Second Star is a nod to him, inspired by the idea of finding something precious and steady to hold onto, even in the hardest moments. I don’t normally get personal on my blog posts but it doesn’t feel right to not talk about Petey. After all, he has been with me through everything and half my business is named after him. That does bring me some peace to know he will live on through “Evelyn And Peter”. He was just shy of his 16th birthday when we had to say goodbye. I miss him terribly and i’m sure many of you can relate.

The name also reflects the feeling I wanted this design to hold. Something soft, and a little bit magical, like a reminder to look for the small lights that guide us forward.

The Second Star Lace Tee is a light, airy summer top designed with soft texture, gentle structure, and an easy, romantic feel. Worked in a fun lacy stitch with a ribbed V-neck and a relaxed silhouette, it’s the kind of piece that feels effortless to wear. A soft drawstring waist allows for adjustable shaping, making it as comfortable and versatile. It’s worked in 2 panels, from side to side. Once you seam it together you’ll add the ribbed neckline and the bottom trim with drawstring. I have a video tutorial if you are a visual learner!

I used Lion Brand Cottino yarn for The Second Star Lace Tee crochet pattern. There are so many beautiful colors to choose from. It’s light weight and super soft. I really have been enjoying it. If you need yarn, be sure to check out my kit, which includes the yarn and a free copy of the pattern download.

Assembly-

Steam block your panels to the measurements listed above.

Place your left and right panels together, RS facing. You will be joining your final row on the back side of the panels and the front side of the panels, leaving the opening in the middle for your head. Use your needle and yarn tail. I used the mattress St to seam but I put my needle under both loops on one panel and through the back loop only on the second panel (doesn’t matter which one), working my way across. That way, the seam mimics the look of the Sc Sts in the BLO. Feel free to use whatever seaming method you prefer.

Next, fold your top in half, RS facing. Measure out your armhole openings and place a SM to mark it off. Approximately 7(7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 10.5)” from the shoulder down should be left open. You can customize your armhole openings if you prefer them bigger or smaller so feel free to make adjustments. Seam from the bottom hem, up the side to your SM and repeat on other side.

Neckline-

Next we will create the ribbed neckline, working in rows, in 2 separate sections. With your panels still RS facing, join a new piece of yarn with a Sl St to the end of Row 24(28, 32, 32, 36, 40, 40, 44, 48) on the Right Panel. You’ll be working your first neckline Row across the unworked Sts of Row 23(27, 31, 31, 35, 39, 39, 43, 47) of the panel.

Row 1: 1 Sc into each St and Ch Sp across until you reach the end of Row 28 on the other side. Sl St to join into the end of Row 28, Sl St up one more time, turn.

Row 2: 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across, Sl St to the end of the shaping rows on the other side, Sl St up once more, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until just before you reach the center front/back seams. I made 8 rows total. Your exact row count is not crucial here. If you find that you need to make more or less rows, feel free to do so.

Fasten off and repeat the same process on the other side, joining your yarn to the end of Row 24(28, 32, 32, 36, 40, 40, 44, 48) on the opposite panel. Make the same amount of rows that you did on the first side. Fasten off.

Bottom Trim-

With your panels still RS facing, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom hem of your top, to the left of either side seam.

Round 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly around the bottom opening of your top. Exact St count is not crucial here but you will want to make sure it’s an even number. Sl St to the first Sc made to join, turn.

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St around, Sl St to the first Sc made to join, turn.

Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as 1 Dc and 1 Ch Sp), Sk next St, 1 Dc in following, *Ch 1, Sk 1, 1 Dc* repeat from * to * around until 1 St remains, Ch 1, Sk 1, Sl St to join in the 3rd Ch of the starting Ch 4, turn.

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St and Ch Sp around, Sl St to the first Sc made to join.

Fasten off.

Armhole Trim-

With your top RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the left of the side seam on either armhole opening. 1 Sc into each St around. Sl St to the first Sc made to join. Fasten off and repeat on other arm. Exact St count is not crucial here.

Drawstring-

Ch 250(250, 275, 275, 300, 300, 325, 325, 350), 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each remaining Ch across.

Fasten off. Weave your drawstring throughout the Sts in round 3 of your bottom trim. Feel free to adjust the placement of your drawstring to your liking.

Weave in any remaining ends.
