One of my favorite things to make and wear in the summer time are light and lacy cardigans. The Fernbrook Cardigan crochet pattern is perfect for just that.
My favorite part about the Fernbrook Cardigan crochet pattern is that it’s worked up all in one piece! You’ll be starting from the bottom of the back of the cardigan and working your way up. You’ll split off at the neckline and work one front panel. Then, you’ll join back in at the neckline and work the second front panel. Some cute ribbed detail is added last before working a few inches of slip stitches on either side! Super simple and easy to adjust length as well. To make your cardigan longer or shorter, just add or remove rows in multiples of 2 before splitting the neckline. Then, you’ll add or remove the same amount of rows to each front panel as well.
I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn for the Fernbrook Cardigan crochet pattern. This is one of my favorite cotton yarns to design warm weather garments with. There are so many beautiful colors to pick from so be sure to check out the kit!
The Fernbrook Cardigan is a 2 row repeat. So it’s super easy to stitch up once you have those 2 rows memorized! The lacy stitches quickly fly off your hook as you go. It’s light weight and looks so cute tossed on over your favorite summer dress.
The Fernbrook Cardigan is a light and lacy layering piece that’s perfect for warm weather days and into fall. Worked all in one piece from the bottom up, the design features airy open stitches, ribbed edging, and side slits for a relaxed, effortless look. The simple construction creates a seamless flow throughout the garment, making it both enjoyable to crochet and comfortable to wear. A full video tutorial is included to help guide you every step of the way.
To make a gauge swatch, work 25 Fsc Sts. Then, follow rows 2-12 of pattern. Your swatch will be bigger than the required gauge. Measure within the swatch to check gauge.
This pattern is worked in one large panel starting from the bottom back.
The starting Ch 1 does not count as a St.
The starting Ch 5 counts as 1 Tr St.
This cardigan features a stretchy lace fabric that naturally lengthens when worn. Finished measurements are taken with the garment laid flat before adding ribbing. While the cardigan may appear shorter when measured flat, it will gain several inches of length once worn. Keep this in mind before adding extra rows, as doing so may result in a finished garment that is longer than intended.
To adjust the length of your cardigan, add or remove rows in multiples of 2 before splitting the neckline. Add or remove the same amount of rows to each front panel before working the final row.

Right Front Panel-
With your work wrong side up and your finished panel on your right hand side, join you yarn into the Ch Sp where your second SM was placed.
Rows 33(35, 37, 39, 43, 45)-61(65, 69, 73, 81, 85): Repeat Rows 3 & 4. (29(33, 37, 45, 49, 53) Sts) You will end on a Row 3 repeat.

Do not fasten off, do not turn. We will go directly into the right side ribbing.
Right Side Ribbing-
Row 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly across the side of the cardigan, stopping at the corner of the back panel, turn. Exact St count is not crucial to the pattern. I worked approximately 5 Sc in each Row 3 repeat and 1 Sc in each Row 4 repeat. Feel free to make adjustments here if needed, being careful to not use too many Sts or it will make your work wavy.
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, 1 Sc in first St, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across until 1 remains, 1 Sc in last, turn.
Fasten off.
Left Side Ribbing-
With your work WS up, join yarn with a Sl St to the unworked bottom corner of the back panel.
Repeat Rows 1-4 of the Right Side Ribbing.
Fasten off.
Front Neckline Ribbing-
With your work WS up, join yarn with a Sl St to the corner of the front panel.
Row 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the first front panel, across the back neckline and down the side of the second front panel, stopping at the corner, turn.
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, 1 Sc in first St, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across until 1 St remains, 1 Sc in last St, turn.
Do not fasten off after last row is made. Go directly to the “Finish Up” section.
Finish Up-
Continuing from the neckline ribbing, you will work a row of Sc Sts along the bottom of the same front panel. When you get to the corner, fasten off. With your work RS up, join in to the second front panel corner with a Sl St and repeat the same thing, working a row of Sc Sts along the bottom. Finally, with your work still RS up, join in to the back panel corner and work a row of Sc Sts across. Fasten off. Block your panel to the measurements listed above. I did a light steam block.
Next we will be working a small seam on the sides of the cardigan to create our armhole openings and our side slits.
Place your cardigan together, RS facing. Measure approximately 8(9, 9, 9.5, 10, 11)” from the shoulder down. Place a SM. Measure about 4” from the SM down and place a second SM. Sew the space in between the SMs together to join. You can use your preferred seaming method here. I used my hook and Sl St across in the BLO. You can also use your needle and mattress St across. Repeat the same process on the opposite side.
