Is there anything better than exploring the woods on a warm summer day? It’s quiet and peaceful, nowhere to be and no responsibilities. You can hear the birds chirping and the creek trickling. That’s what I picture when I wear The Summer Path cardigan at least. 🙂
This cardigan is worked in 3 separate panels. The 2 main panels are worked side to side and the last one is worked bottom up. The one that is worked from the bottom up is the back detail of the cardigan that will be sewn in between the 2 main panels half way up. I’ve made a couple other things are worked side to side. Check them out here and here!
I absolutely love the Triad Stitch that I used in this design! It works up quickly and gives it an open stitch look, perfect for summer! Make sure you pay close attention to where you are sticking your hook for the Triad! I have a video tutorial available for those that need a little extra help. Be sure to check it out!

Notes:
This cardigan is worked in 3 separate panels. You will be making 2 main panels and 1 back panel. The main panels are worked from side to side and the back panel is worked from the bottom up.
Depending on size made, your panels will end in either a Row 2 or a Row 3 repeat.
When you sew your back panel to your main panels, it should meet halfway up the main panels.
Triad St- [YO, insert hook into next St, YO and pull up a loop] 3 times (7 loops on hook), YO and pull through 6 loops on hook, YO and pull through final 2 loops on hook
Pattern:
Main Panel (make 2)-
Row 1(RS): 129(129, 133, 141, 145, 149, 153, 157, 161)Fsc, turn. Note- alternatively you can Ch 1 more than the number listed above and work a Sc St in the second Ch from hook and across for the required stitch count. (129(129, 133, 141, 145, 149, 153, 157, 161) Sc)
Row 2: Ch 4, starting in next St, work a Triad St, Ch 1, *starting in the same St of the last leg of the previous St, work a Triad St, Ch 1* repeat from * to * across row, 1 Dc in final St, turn. (129(129, 133, 141, 145, 149, 153, 157, 161) Sts)
Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count), 1 Dc in each St and Ch Sp across row, turn. Note- don’t forget the Ch 4 from the previous row counts as a St and a Ch Sp. You will work 1 Dc into the Ch 4 Sp and finish with 1 Dc into the 3rd Ch of the Ch 4. (129(129, 133, 141, 145, 149, 153, 157, 161) Dc)
Note- alternatively you can Ch 1 more than the number listed above and work a Sc St in the second Ch from hook and across for the required stitch count. (11(11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15) Sc)
Row 2: Ch 4, starting in next St, work a Triad St, Ch 1, *starting in the same St of the last leg of the previous St, work a Triad St, Ch 1* repeat from * to * across row, 1 Dc in final St, turn. (11(11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15) Sts)
Row 3: Ch 2, 1 Dc in each St and Ch Sp across row, turn. (11(11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15) Dc)
After blocking your panels to the measurements above, we will now be joining them together. Lay your main panels RS down next to each other. Make sure Row 1 of both panels are on the outer sides. Place the back panel in between the 2 main panels, RS down and Row 1 at the bottom. Seam each side of the back panel to Row 11(12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21) of both of the main panels. You will be seaming halfway up the main panels a total of 65(65, 67, 71, 73, 75, 77, 79, 81) Sts and leaving the other half unworked. Each Row of the back panel is stitched to 2 Sts of the main panel.
Repeat on other side, tie off.
Now fold the main panels over, RS facing. We will be sewing up the sides and measuring the arm holes.
Using your measuring tape, measure from the shoulder down. Measure 7(7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11)” and place a SM through both sides of the panel. Sew from the bottom hem up to the SM making sure your stitches are lined up. Tie off and repeat on other side.
Sleeves-
With your cardigan correct side out, join yarn with a Sl St to the St just to the left of your SM.
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St around, Sl St to the first Sc made. Note- Exact St count is not crucial here.
Rounds 2 & 3: Ch 1, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St around, Sl St to join.
Tie off and repeat on other side.
Trim-
With your cardigan correct side out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom corner of the left panel. Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the cardigan, Sc along the back neckline and continue down the side of the second front panel. When you reach the bottom corner of the right panel, work 3 Sc into the same St, continue working Sc stitches along the bottom of the cardigan (approximately 2 Sc per row), work 2 final Sc into the same spot as the first Sc made. Sl St to the first Sc to join.
