Into The Woods Cowl Crochet Pattern

This is a new one for me and I hope you guys like it as much as I do! I’ve never made a hooded cowl before but it has definitely always been something on my “must design” list. I drew some inspo from the classic granny stitch and combined it with some retro looking colors! It’ll keep you super warm and cozy that’s for sure!

This design is worked from the bottom up! For the cowl portion you will work in turned rounds using the granny stripe stitch. Once you reach the hood portion you will work in turned rows. I recommend cutting and joining your yarn for the cowl. When you reach the hood, no need to cut your yarn. Just pick it up the side when you need to switch colors. The trim to the hood is added last. Make sure you thread your drawstring as you go to make it easier on yourself!

I used Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn for my Into The Woods Cowl. They have some really nice color options too! If you purchase the Lion Brand kit you can switch out your color choices! The kit also comes with a complimentary digital download of my pattern!

Into The Woods Cowl Crochet Pattern

Pattern:

With Color A-

Round 1 (WS): Work 99 Fsc, Sl St to the first Sc made to join (do not turn). Be careful not to twist your work. There will be a slight gap where you joined that you will sew shut later. (99 Sc)

Round 2(WS): Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc here and throughout), 2 Dc in first St (the same St you just Sl St into), *Sk 2 Sts, 3 Dc in next* repeat from * to * around until 2 Sts remain, Sk over last 2 Sts and Sl St to the top of the Ch 3 to join, TURN. (99 Dc)

Round 3(RS): Sl St into first Sp between clusters, Ch 3, 2 Dc into same Sp, *Sk 3, 3 Dc into next Sp* repeat from * to * around, Sl St into the top of the Ch 3, turn. (99 Dc)

Switch to Color B here and take note that you will be changing colors every 2 rows from here and throughout the rest of the pattern. This is not written in the row instructions. Work Color B for 2 rows, switch to Color C and work 2 rows, switch to Color A and work 2 rows etc.

Rounds 4-19: Repeat Row 3.

Make sure you turn after row 19. We will now be splitting the hood and working in turned rows. You will no longer be joining. Continue to change colors every 2 rows. At this point I recommend to just bring up your yarn with you along the side of the hood (NOT all the way around) when you switch colors. You will be crocheting a trim around the opening and can crochet directly over them. This way you do not have to cut and weave in ends for this part.

Row 20: Sl St to first Sp, Ch 3, 2 Dc into same Sp, *Sk 3, 3 Dc into next Sp* repeat across. After you work your last set of 3 Dc, do not join, turn.  (99 Dc)

We will now be working a decrease row.

Row 21: Ch 3, Sk 3, work 3 Dc into each of the first 6 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc], work 3 Dc into the next 6 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc], work 3 Dc into the next 4 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc], work 3 Dc into the next 6 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc], work 3 Dc into the final 6 Sp’s, 1 Dc into the top of the Ch 3, turn. (86 Dc)

Row 22: Ch 3, 3 Dc in first Sp (the Sp before the first cluster), *Sk 3, 3 Dc in next Sp* repeat from * to * around, 1 Dc in top of Ch 3, turn. (89 Dc)

Row 23: Ch 3, *Sk 3, 3 Dc in next Sp* repeat from * to * around, Sk last 3 Dc, 1 Dc in top of Ch 3, turn. (86 Dc)

We will now be working a second decrease row.

Row 24: Ch 3, work 3 Dc into each of the first 5 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc], *work 3 Dc into the next 5 Sp’s, Ch 1 and Sk over the following [3 Dc, 1 Sp, 3 Dc]*, repeat from * to * 2 more times, 3 Dc into the final 5 Sp’s, 1 Dc in top of Ch 3, turn. (77 Dc)

Row 25: Ch 3, *Sk 3, 3 Dc in next Sp* repeat from * to * around, Sk last 3 Dc, 1 Dc in top of Ch 3, turn. (74 Dc)

Row 26: Ch 3, 3 Dc in first Sp (the Sp before the first cluster), *Sk 3, 3 Dc in next Sp* repeat from * to * around, 1 Dc in top of Ch 3, turn. (77 Dc)

Rows 27-45: Repeat Rows 25 & 26. You will end on a Row 25 repeat. Do not tie off, you can go directly into seaming the hood shut.

Seam Hood:

Turn cowl wrong side out. Fold your hood in half. We will be slip stitching the last row together to seam the top shut. Putting your hook through both stitches, insert your hook, YO and pull through both sides and the loop on your hook. Do this all the way across. (Join stitch 1 to 74, 2 to 73, 3 to 72 etc.)

Tie off.

Hood Trim:

Turn your cowl RS out. We will now be adding the trim to the opening of the cowl. With your cowl in front of you, RS facing up, join yarn Color A with a Sl St to the Ch 3 on the right of the center unworked neckline cluster at Row 19.

Round 1: Ch 1, 1 Sc in same St and next 2 St’s, continue up the first side of the hood by working 2 Sc into the side of each of the granny stripe rows. When you reach the top seam work 1 Sc into it. Continue down the opposite side of the hood with 2 Sc into the side of each row. When you reach the first Sc made at the bottom, Sl St into it to join. TURN. (108 Sc)

We will now be working the rest of the trim in turned rows to create a flap that we will be folding over and later sewing.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 1 Sc in the next 105 Sts, working your way back around the hood, when you reach the final 3 St’s at the neckline cluster, leave them unworked, turn. (105 Sc)

Rows 2-4: Ch 1 1 Sc in each St across, turn. (105 Sc)

Tie off, leave a 24” tail to sew your hood trim shut.

Drawstring:

With Color A-

Ch 201 and Sl St back down the Ch. (200 Sl St)

Tie off.

Sew Trim/ Thread Cord:

Fold the hood trim over onto the outside of your hood. (Note- lay your drawstring down now and work the seam “over” it so you don’t have to thread it in later. Using the long tail and a yarn needle stitch row 4 of the trim to the outside of your hood along round 1, creating an open tube. Thread/move the cord along as you go.

Weave in all ends.

Optional:

Add mini pompoms to the bottom of your drawstrings.
