I remember working with Landscapes yarn many years ago, so when Lion Brand released Landscapes Renewed, I knew I had to try it! Dare I say I like this one better than normal Landscapes?! I immediately got to work on The Strata Sunrise Throw crochet pattern.
I gravitated towards the orange color right away. It reminds me of southern Utah and all the beautiful rock formations in the deep reds and oranges you see! If you have ever been, you know exactly what I am talking about! I knew I had to get it.
When I was browsing the different color options I decided on getting a secondary yarn to help make the design pop even more. I went with Heartland. One, because that is my tried and true. Two, because it had the perfect deep orange I was looking for to compliment the Desert Spring color I chose. The Heartland yarn will be used to work the surface stitches and border of the blanket! You only need 1 skein. Be aware however you will use almost the whole skein so pay close attention to the length of tails you leave when working it up.
For the main body of the blanket I used the same stitch repeat that I used in the Pine Grove Pullover. The only difference is that I spaced the post stitches further apart to work with the blanket. Those stitches are what you will be working the slip stitches onto later! Finally, I added a border, making the top and bottom extra fancy with arches.
The Strata Sunrise Throw is a reflection of shifting light and layered color. Worked with beautiful yarn that fades from cream to deep amber, this cozy blanket mimics the beauty of canyon walls at sunrise. A rhythmic stitch pattern and soft texture make this the perfect meditative project. A full video tutorial is included to walk you through each step.

Surface Stitches:

Next we are going to add surface stitches to the length of the post stitches up our blanket.
Create a slip knot but do not pull it tight to your hook, leave it as a small loop and remove from your hook. With your blanket RS up, insert your crochet hook from front to back into the bottom of one of the lengths of post stitches (doesn’t matter which row of them you start at). Place your loop back onto your hook and pull it through your blanket to the front. Pull it up to the height of the bottom of the double crochet in the next row. Insert your hook in the bottom of the double crochet, YO and pull a loop through to the front and through the loop on your hook, creating a Sl St. Repeat this same process up the entire length of the blanket. When you reach the top of the blanket, put your hook into the top of the last Dc St, YO and pull through to fasten off your tail. Repeat on each Dc post section. Please view the video tutorial linked above to see exactly where I placed my hook and Sts.

With your blanket RS up, join yarn with a Sl St to the upper left side, at the end of your final row made.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 2 Sc into the end of each row all the way down the left side of the blanket (120 Sc), when you reach the first St at the corner of Row 1, work 3 Sc into it. Place a SM in the center St of the 3 (this marks the last St of the row for the bottom border). 1 Sc into each St along the bottom until 1 St remains, 3 Sc into last St, place a SM into the center of the 3 (this marks the first St of the bottom border row). Work 2 Sc into the end of each row up the side (120 Sc), when you reach the St at the corner of the last row of your blanket, work 3 Sc into it, place a SM into the center of the 3 (this marks the last St of the row for the top border). 1 Sc into each St along the top until 1 St remains, 3 Sc into the last St, place a SM in the center of the 3 (this marks the first St of the row for the top border). Sl St to the first Sc made to join, TURN. Do not fasten off. (510 Sc)
Top Border:
1 Sl St in first 2 Sts, (you should now be in the St marked off with your SM-the center St of the group of 3),
Row 1: Ch 3 (Counts as 1 Dc), 1 Dc in next St, Sk 1, V-St in next, *[Sk 2, V- St] 3 times, Sk 1, 1 Dc in next, Sk 1, V-St in next*, repeat from * to * until 12 Sts remain, [Sk 2, V-St] 3 times, Sk 1, 1 Dc in last 2 Sts, turn. (133 Sts)
Row 2: Ch 2, 1 Hdc in each St and Ch-1 Sp across until 2 Sts remain, 2 Hdc in next St, 1 Hdc in last St, turn. (134 Hdc)
Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as 1 Dc and Ch Sp), Sk next St, 1 Sc in following, *Ch 5, Sk 2 Sts, 1 Sc in next, Ch 3, Sk 2 Sts, 1 Sc in next*, repeat from * to * across row until 5 Sts remain, Ch 5, Sk 2, 1 Sc in next, Ch 2, Sk 1, 1 Dc in last, turn. (22 Ch-5 Sps)
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 Sc in first St, *[4 Dc, Ch 1, 4 Dc] in Ch-5 Sp, 1 Sc in Ch-3 Sp*, repeat from * to * across row until 1 Ch-5 Sp and the starting Ch 4 remains, 4 Dc, Ch 1, 4 Dc in last Ch-5 Sp, 1 Sc in the 2nd Ch of the starting Ch 4. (22 arches)
Fasten off.
Bottom Border:
Flip your blanket over, RS facing down. Join yarn with a Sl St to the center Sc of the 3 Sc on the right hand side, where your SM is located.
