There is just something special about Mandala Ombre yarn. The beautiful color combos definitely call to me. I’ve been eyeing a couple of the colors this year and knew I needed to create a blanket with one of them. The Sunrise Surf Throw crochet pattern is exactly what I wanted!
I wanted something with a simple stitch repeat but also wanted amazing texture. Nothing too crazy because the yarn already elevates the blanket and does all the talking! Working up these rows using double post stitches ended up perfect! They are super easy and fun to do as well. It gives it just the right amount of texture without being too overwhelming.
I had just the right amount of yarn left to add on a little bit of a fancy side border as well. I played around with different waves to add to the edge until I settled on a nice repeat for the length. I also wanted to add in an extra something by creating “triple picots” to the top of each wave. Super simple to do and makes it even better! The Sunrise Surf Throw lion brand kit comes with all the yarn you need and a free copy of the printable digital download PDF. I definitely recommend it if you plan on using the mandala ombre yarn!
You can easily adjust the width of your blanket by adding or removing Dc stitches in multiples of 4 off my provided stitch count. You can also add rows to make it longer. You will want to add rows in multiples of 12 so that you end up with enough stitches on the border to add in another repeat of the side edge wave. Take into account your yardage will change. If you are using the mandala ombre yarn you will need an extra skein.
This blanket is very simple once you get the stitch repeat down! We will work from the bottom up, then add 1 round of a border. After that you will add 1 row of the waves and picots to the long sides of the blanket. Be sure to check out my video tutorial for extra help!
Experience the joy of crochet with the Sunrise Surf Throw crochet pattern! The calming stitch repeat ensures a delightful crafting experience, while the colorful Mandala Ombré yarn creates a unique striping effect in every blanket. The charming picot wave edging adds a playful touch to the sides, making this throw both beautiful and fun to create. A detailed video tutorial is included to guide you every step of the way!

I/5.5mm Crochet hook
Needle
Scissors
Gauge:
13 Sts by 11 rows= 4×4”
To make a swatch, work rows 1-13 of pattern with 19 Fdc for row 1. Your swatch will be larger than gauge. Measure 4×4” within your swatch to check gauge.
Finished Measurements:
44” W x 49” L (not including border)
Notes:
The starting Ch 2 does not count as a St.
The starting Ch 1 does not count as a St.
When working your Dp Sts be sure to give enough slack with the yarn so that your work doesn’t pucker.
Your Dp St will always be worked around the Dc that is 2 rows directly below it. Pay close attention when setting up the first Dp row that they are spaced correctly. The remaining Dp rows will be easy to locate where to place the St.
To make your blanket wider, add Dc Sts to row 1 in multiples of 4.
To make your blanket longer add more rows before fastening off. Be aware that this will alter the St count required for the side border. You would need to add at least 12 more rows to the blanket so that you can fit another repeat of the border.
Double Post (Dp)- YO, insert hook around the post of the indicated St from 2 rows below, YO and pull up a loop (approximately 1” in height), YO insert hook around the same post, YO and pull up a loop (approximately 1” in height), YO and pull through the first 4 loops, YO and pull through remaining 2 loops
Triple Picot- Ch 4, Sl St to first Ch made, Ch 4, Sl St into the same Ch (the original first Ch), Ch 4, Sl St into the same Ch as the previous two times
Pattern:
Row 1: 143 Fdc, turn. (143 Dc) Alternatively you can Ch 145, work 1 Dc in the 3rd Ch from the hook and each Ch across for a total of 143 Dc. The skipped Chs at the start do not count as a St.
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a St), 1 Sc in each St across row, turn. (143 Sc)
Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a St), 1 Dc in first 3 Sts, 1 Dp around the post of the Dc from 2 rows below (the 4th St), Sk the next Sc in the current row (the one directly behind the Dp you just made), *1 Dc in next 3 Sts, 1 Dp around the post of the Dc from 2 rows below, Sk the next Sc in the current row* repeat from * to * across the row until 3 Sts remain, 1 Dc in last 3 Sts, turn. (143 Sts)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Ch 2, 1 Dc in first St, 1 Dp around the post of the Dc from 2 rows below (the 2nd St), Sk the next Sc in the current row (the one directly behind the Dp you just made), *1 Dc in next 3 Sts, 1 Dp around the post of the Dc from 2 rows below, Sk the next Sc in the current row* repeat from * to * across the row until 1 St remains, 1 Dc in final St, turn. (143 Sts)
Rows 6-135: Repeat rows 2-5. You will end on a Row 3 repeat.
Do not fasten off, we will now go directly into working the border.
Border-
Make sure you turned your work after Row 135.
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St across the top of the blanket, when you get to the first corner work 1 extra Sc into it, rotate your work and Sc down the side by working 2 Sc into the ends of each Dc row and 1 Sc into the ends of each Sc row. When you reach the second corner, work 1 extra Sc into it. Continue with 1 Sc into each St across the bottom. When you reach the 3rd corner work 1 extra Sc into it. Continue up the side of the blanket with 2 Sc into the end of each Dc row and 1 Sc into the end of each Sc row. When you reach the last corner, work 1 more Sc into it. Sl St to the first Sc made to join, turn. (696 Sc)
Note- it’s important to set the round up with the correct Sts on the long sides of the blanket so you can work the Row 2 border. View the graph below for St counts.
Row 2: Ch 1 (your first Sc will be in the “corner” st), *3 Sc, 2 Hdc, 2 Dc, 2 Tr, 1 Triple Picot, 1 Tr, 2 Dc, 2 Hdc, 3 Sc*, repeat from * to * 11 more times, Sl St into next St (the corner St), fasten off. (12 repeats)
You will repeat the same thing on the second side of the blanket. With your blanket still facing RS up join yarn with a Sl St to the second bottom corner St and repeat Row 2 up the side.
