Check You Later Throw Crochet Pattern

I don’t know about you but I’ve been seeing checkers everywhere this season! On shirts, shoes, hats, rugs, bags and of course, blankets!! I wanted to put my own spin on the trend and came up with The Check You Later Throw!

After testing out different ways to make a checkered design I finally settled on working it up in strips. I know doing separate squares is more time consuming and can be intimidating so I got rid of that idea. I swatched a bit with C2C but ultimately decided that there would be too many skeins of yarn going at once for the amount of squares I wanted. I also thought about working in rows but that would still require too many balls of yarn at once for me. I wanted something a bit easier for a beginner to do! After I did a test working it from the bottom up in separate strips I knew I found the winner!!

There are 2 separate strip patterns, Panel A and Panel B. You will be making 5 Panel A and 4 of Panel B. They are made from the bottom up. You will have to cut and join yarn each time you change colors for the squares but don’t worry! Tie the tails together in a secure knot. Then, you can crochet over the tails for less ends to weave. I only did this when changing from color B to Color A. I would work my Dc stitches over half the tail. Then after I was done I weaved them back the other way to make it extra secure. I did not crochet over the tails when making the Color B square. I found that because of the stitch I used it didn’t hide the tails well enough and you could see it peaking through. I save those to weave in at the end.

When I made my strips, I kept my colors in order as they came. I did not do any special cutting and rearranging of yarn colors. I worked my panels from let to right starting with the first Panel A and picked up each skein where I left off in the previous square. That does not mean you have to do the same though! You can join in your colors from the Mandala however you would like.

Speaking of yarn, I used Mandala Ombre and Basic Stitch for this blanket. The Mandala yarn is ombre style and fades to different colors as you crochet. There are so many pretty colors to choose from! If you want to customize your yarn colors be sure to check out the kit. My kit for the Check You Later Throw includes all the yarn plus a free copy of the digital PDF pattern!

I weaved in my ends on each strip of the Check You Later Throw as I went so that I would have less to do at the very end and so that they wouldn’t get in the way with seaming. I used a needle and the invisible seaming method to join mine and was very happy with the outcome!

Notes:

  • This blanket is made in 9 different strips, from the bottom up and then sewn together.

  • You will make 5 strips of Panel A and 4 strips of Panel B. Alternate working 1 Panel A and 1 Panel B if you want to keep the yarn in the correct order.

  • I did not do any rearranging of colors as I made my blanket. When finishing a square with Color B, I picked up where I left off in the skein for the following Color B square. However, if you want to cut and join the yarn colors out of order and arrange to your liking you can do that as well.

  • When you fasten off a color and join in a new one make sure you knot the 2 ends together. You can crochet over the ends halfway, so later on you only need to weave them back through once. This way you have less weaving in to complete later on.

  • The Ch 2 at the start of the row does not count as a stitch.

Join Panels-

Take your first Panel A and your first Panel B, place them together RS facing and the same direction. Use the tail of yarn (color A) and your needle to sew down the side length of the panels, joining together. Take your second Panel A, place it RS facing on the first Panel B and again sew down the side of the strips to join. Continue in the same manner until all 9 panels are sewn together. I used the invisible seam method for mine. However, you can use whichever method you prefer. Be very careful as you sew and make sure the squares are lined up nicely. If you don’t make sure they are placed correctly your checkers will look wonky and uneven. You can use stitch markers here to help keep everything in place.

Add Trim-

With you blanket RS up and using Color B, join yarn with a Sl St to the top right corner. Sc evenly across the top working 1 Sc into each Dc St and 1 Sc into each cluster and Ch Sp. When you reach the next corner, work 3 Sc into the same St. Continue down the side of your blanket working approximately 2 Sc into the ends of each row. When you reach the next corner work 3 Sc into the same St. Continue in this method until you reach the first St. Work 2 final Sc into the same St as your first Sc. Sl St to join. St count is not crucial here, just try to place your Sts evenly.

Fasten off and weave in any remaining ends.
