The Poppy Pullover Crochet Pattern

Did I just find my new favorite cotton yarn? I think I did. Be prepared for so many designs using this yarn because I am obsessed! My first make using this yarn is called The Poppy Pullover!

I used Lion Brand 24/7 cotton DK for the Poppy Pullover crochet pattern. Don’t get it confused with the worsted weight version! The DK weight is obviously thinner and much more soft. It had no splitting and no tangles as I crocheted. I’m absolutely in love with it! I used the color Cacao for mine but they have a lot of pretty choices.

The Poppy Pullover is crocheted in separate panels from the bottom up. You’ll be using a larger hook in comparison to the yarn to give it more of a mesh look. It’s important to not pull your stitches tight. You want a relaxed and even tension so you can give it the perfect drape. Feel free to go up in hook size if you normally have a tight tension and/or your gauge is off. Once you have all your panels complete you will sew them together.

The Poppy Pullover is easy to make adjustments to. You can add or takeaway as many rows as you want on the back panel to adjust the length. Just be sure to make the same adjustments on the front panel as well, right before you split the neckline.

Notes:

  • A larger hook is used to give the stitch a “mesh” look. Do not pull your stitches tight, try and keep a relaxed and even tension.

  • The Ch 2 at the start of the row does not count as a stitch.

  • The Ch 1 within the rows counts as 1 St.

  • The numbers in parenthesis at the beginning of the row are the row counts for all sizes. The numbers in parenthesis at the end of the rows are the stitch counts for all sizes. The numbers in parenthesis within the rows are the directions for all sizes.

  • You will be making a back panel, front panel and 2 sleeve panels then joining together.

  • You can make your top as long or as short as you would like by adding or removing rows on the back panel before fastening off. Then, add or remove the same amount of rows to the front panel right before the “Split Neckline” section. Take into account the yardage requirement listed above will change.

  • This top is stretchy! It will stretch approximately 4-6” longer than the length listed above with the weight of being worn.

  • For a less baggy top, size down.

  • The decreases on the left and right neckline/shoulder shaping start on different rows.

Assembly-

If needed, block your panels to the measurements listed above. I prefer to steam block mine but you can use the method of your choice.

Place your front and back panels together, RS facing. Using your preferred seaming method attach the front panel to the back panel at the shoulders (I used my hook and slip stitched across). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches.

Next, using the same joining process as above, we will be attaching the sleeves. Make sure the center of the sleeve is aligned with the shoulder seam. Be sure to check that your sleeves are even on both the front and back panel as you go. It is helpful to use SM’s here to keep your sleeve in place as you join.

Finally, fold your top so that the back and front panels are on top of each other, RS facing. Seam from the end of the sleeve to the underarm and down the side of the top. I left about 6” unseamed on both sides to create the side slit.

Optional- roll the sleeves and add a small stitch at the seam to hold in place.

Neckline-

With top RS out, join yarn with a Sl St at one of the shoulder seams. Ch 1, work Sc Sts evenly around the opening of the neckline. Sl St to the first Sc to join, fasten off. Stitch count is not crucial here, just keep your Sts evenly spaced.

Weave in any remaining ends.
