Sunnyside Vest Crochet Pattern

I’ve always wanted to crochet a cute little vest but I wanted to do something a little more unique than just all basic stitches. I knew I wanted to incorporate granny squares or motifs somehow after being inspired by a shower curtain with pretty motifs along the middle that reminded me of sunshine. That’s how we ended up with The Sunnyside Vest crochet pattern!

The Sunnyside Vest is worked in 3 separate panels after you get the motifs worked up. Each size will have a different amount of motifs along the back. Once you make all of your motifs you will join them together before finishing the back panel from the bottom up. The front panels are also worked from the bottom up before being joined at the shoulder and side seam.

I used Cotton Bamboo Linen yarn from Lion Brand which is a Fine (2) weight yarn. This is a newer yarn and has some lovely colors. I used Shale for my Sunnyside Vest crochet pattern. I loved the lightweight feel of this yarn and the fiber combo is perfect for a warm weather garment!

You will notice some of the sizes are combination sizes. This is due to the fact that it is a form fitting garment and the motifs along the back are all the same size. To find your size, just locate your bust size on the chart!

Usually I make a full video tutorial walkthrough for my designs. For this one I was not able to do a tutorial for the entire thing. I did make a video on how to make the motifs, join the motifs, and set up the first row for the back panel. In my opinion this might be the trickiest part for beginners so I wanted to make sure I provided a visual for you guys! After you are all set up it is just Hdc stitches throughout, with some decreasing and shaping! I had a very busy month when designing the Sunnyside Vest crochet pattern and my family was sick with the stomach bug for weeks. I hope you can forgive me for not having a full walkthrough but I am always available to help with pattern questions! Check out the video tutorial here!

Join Motifs-

Lay your motifs out RS facing up with all of them facing in the same direction. It does not matter which side is the top, I used the side with the fasten off tail as the tops of the motifs. Take 2, place them RS facing. Use your needle and sew together up one side. You can use any sewing method you prefer here. I used the invisible seam method. Next, take your 3rd motif, line it up the same way and sew up the side to join. Continue in this manner until you have a row of joined motifs. Check out the video tutorial for a visual in joining.

Back Panel-

With your motifs sewn and RS up, join yarn with a Sl St to the center Sc of the 5 Sc in the top right corner of the first motif. Your first St will be in the same spot as the SM on the top right. Your last St of that square will be in the same St as the upper left SM.  (View photo)

Join Panels-

Block panels to the measurements listed above. I like to do a light steam block on mine. Place your back and front panels together, RS facing. Sew the straps together using your seaming method of choice. Next, sew down the sides of the vest using the same method. Be sure to line the back and front panel up evenly. Your first 8 rows of the front panel will be lined up with the back panel motif. Seam from Row 1 up to the underarm. Repeat on other side.

sunnyside vest seaming

Trim and Buttons-

With vest RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom inner corner of the  front panel. Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the front panel until you reach  Row 18(18, 20, 22, 24, 24). Ch 4, Sl St back into same spot as your last Sc to join, creating the button loop. Continue Sc Sts up the side until you reach Row 25(25, 27, 29, 31, 31). Ch 4, Sl St back into same spot as your last Sc to join, creating the second button loop. Continue with Sc Sts up the remaining portion of the front panel, along the back neckline and down the second front panel. When you reach the bottom corner, work 3 Sc into the same St, Sc along the bottom of the vest. When you reach the end, work 2 Sc into the same St as the beginning Sc. Sl St to join. Fasten off. Sew 2 buttons on the right hand side, lining up in the same spot as the loops on the left side. St count is not crucial here, just try to keep your Sts even around.

Arm Hole Trim-

With your vest RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the seam at the underarm. Ch 1, Sc evenly around opening of arm. Join to the first Sc with a Sl St. Fasten off and repeat on other side. Stitch count is not crucial here, just try to keep your Sts even.

Weave in any remaining ends.
