The Ocean Point Cardigan Crochet Pattern

Are you nose deep in summer crochet patterns right now like I am?! Can I add another one to your “must make list”?  Summer crochet patterns have always been one of my favorite things to spend time on. There is just something about the open stitches, the cotton yarn and also the fact that you don’t have to make long sleeves! haha! Summer makes usually work up quickly just like my new cardigan design, The Ocean Point Cardigan crochet pattern!

Is it weird that I have never designed a triangle shawl before? I have definitely crocheted a few in the past but never designed my own! I have been wanting to lately but I did not want to make a shawl in the middle of summer! I got the idea to somehow incorporate the shape of a triangle shawl into a cardigan and I am SO glad I did!! After a lot of math and a little bit of frogging I finally came up with the final result!

To create The Ocean Point Cardigan crochet pattern you start at the bottom, creating the triangle shape. If you are familiar with triangle shawls you will have no problem jumping right in. Once you have the triangle complete, you will rotate your work and create the first row of the main body into the ends of the rows you made in the triangle. After you get set up it’s just row repeats with no more shaping there on out! I used tall stitches like double crochet, treble crochet, and treble X St. There is also plenty of Ch 1 Sk 1 sprinkled in for an airy and lacy feel.

Because of the very specific St count and math going on in this cardigan there are 3 separate combo sizes written in the pattern. This cardigan is oversized and has a loose, flowy fit. Each size provided can fit a wide range of body shapes and sizes! To find your size, just locate your bust size on the size chart.

I used a worsted weight yarn for The Ocean Point Cardigan pattern- Pima Cotton from Lion Brand. This is a very soft cotton yarn! I have no trouble with this yarn. It works up beautifully and does not split or snag if you have to frog! They have lots of pretty colors available as well. If you end up purchasing the kit, you can swap out the color if you want to!

If you are finding The Ocean Point Cardigan a tad bit difficult then please check out the video tutorial on my YouTube channel! I walk you through each step on making the cardigan.

Notes:

  • This cardigan is worked up in 3 separate panels from the bottom up, starting with the bottom triangle. Sleeves and trim are added after seaming.

  • This cardigan is oversized with plenty of positive ease written within the pattern.

  • This cardigan is written in 3 combination sizes. Because of the Stitch repeat and the oversized fit, each size can fit a wide range of body shapes and sizes.

  • The starting Ch 3 counts as a stitch. The starting Ch 4 counts as a St. The starting Ch 5 counts as St/ch sp. Pay very close attention to St counts. Your last St made in the rows will be worked into the starting Ch from the previous row.

  • The numbers in parentheses at the beginning of the row are your row counts for all sizes. The numbers in parentheses at the end of the rows are the stitch counts for all sizes. The numbers in parenthesis within the row are your instructions for all sizes.

  • Your back panel will be longer than your front panel.

Main Body-

Do not turn after the last row. You will now be starting the “main body” of the panel. Rotate your work, you will be working Row 1 into the ends of the previous rows across. You will be working 3 Sts into each row end, on both sides.

Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 Tr here and throughout), work 2 more Tr into the end of the same row, continue working 3 Tr into the end of each row across. (30(42, 54) Tr)

Row 6: Ch 4, *Sk next St, 1 Tr in following St, go back and work 1 Tr in the skipped St* repeat from * to * across row, 1 Tr in last St, turn. (30(42, 54) Tr)

Row 7: Repeat Row 2. (16(22, 28) Tr)

Row 8: Repeat Row 6. (30(42, 54) Tr) Note- work your Sts into the actual Ch St not the Ch Sp.

Row 9: Repeat Row 2. (16(22, 28) Tr)

Row 10: Ch 4, 1 Tr in each St and Ch Sp across, turn. (30(42, 54) Tr)

Rows 11-20: Repeat Rows 1-10. Note- for the Row 1 repeats you will be working 1 Tr in each St across instead of into the ends of the rows like the initial row 1.

Rows 21-30: Repeat Rows 1-10.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Assemble Panels-

Block your panels to the measurements listed above. I recommend a light steam block.

Place your front and back panels together RS facing.
Using your preferred seaming method and the long yarn tails, attach the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders (I used my hook and slip stitched across). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches.

Next, we will be measuring the arm hole openings. Fold your cardigan so that the front panels are on top of the back panel, still RS facing. Using your measuring tape, measure from the shoulder seam down the side of the cardigan 7”(8”, 9”). Place a SM at the 7”(8”, 9”) mark through both the front and back panel, making sure the panels are even. This will be the armhole and left un-seamed.

Starting at Row 1 of the “main body” on the bottom of the panels, sew up the side until you reach the SM using the same seaming method. From here, you can move onto the “Sleeves” instructions below without fastening off before repeating on other side.

ocean point cardigan seaming

ocean point cardigan crochet pattern

Sleeves-

Turn your cardigan RS out, with the seams on the inside.

If you fastened off after seaming the sides, join yarn with a Sl St to the underarm seam.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc), Dc evenly around the armhole opening. Sl St to the top of the Ch 3 to join. (46(52, 58) Dc) Note- exact St count is not crucial here. If you find you need to slightly adjust your St count by a couple of Sts that is fine, just be sure you end on an even number.

Round 2: Ch 4 (counts as 1 Dc and Ch 1), Sk next St, 1 Dc in following St, *Ch 1, Sk 1, 1 Dc in next* repeat around, Ch 1, Sk last St, Sl St to the 3rd Ch of the starting Ch 4. (23(26, 29) Dc)

Fasten off, repeat on other side.

Trim-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom inner corner of the front panel on the left hand side (right panel when worn) at Row 1. Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the front panel, along the back neckline and down the second front panel. When you reach the corner at Row 1 on the other side, fasten off. Exact St count is not crucial here, just keep your Sts even as you go.

Weave in any remaining ends.
