The Poppy Cardigan Crochet Pattern

I couldn’t make a Poppy Pullover without making a Poppy Cardigan crochet pattern! The Poppy Pullover was a fan favorite and the Poppy Cardigan has the same design details so I hope you like this one too!

I used the same type of yarn for The Poppy Cardigan- 24/7 Cotton DK, except this time, I used the “prints” version instead of a solid color! I think the prints are so pretty and give it a little bit more pop of color and detail. I wasn’t sure how the yarn was going to work up with the distribution of color but I am loving the result! If you are more of a solid color kind of crocheter you can totally substitute out the yarn, they have lots of options! I used the Seaglass color for mine.

The Poppy Cardigan is worked up the same way as the pullover, from the bottom up. Again, we are using a larger hook than what you normally would use for a DK yarn to give it that loose, mesh look. When you are crocheting, make sure you don’t tug down too tightly on your stitches! If you are prone to a tight tension just make sure to pay attention to that. This is also a really stretchy stitch so when you wear the cardigan it will stretch and has great drape! Once all your panels are made you will give a light block ( I like to steam block mine) and sew together!

If you want to use the same yarn as me make sure you get the Lion Brand kit! It comes with a free copy of my printable pattern and you can choose your yarn color! They also frequently have very good sales! My Poppy Pullover is available on my blog here as well as a Lion Brand kit!

Notes:

  • A larger hook is used to give the stitch a “mesh” look. Do not pull your stitches tight, try and keep a relaxed and even tension.

  • The Ch 2 at the start of the row does not count as a stitch.

  • The Ch 1 within the rows counts as 1 St.

  • The numbers in parenthesis at the beginning of the row are the row counts for all sizes. The numbers in parenthesis at the end of the rows are the stitch counts for all sizes. The numbers in parenthesis within the rows are the directions for all sizes.

  • You will be making a back panel, 2 front panels and 2 sleeve panels, then joining together.

  • You can make your cardigan as long or as short as you would like by adding or removing rows on the back panel before fastening off. Then, add or remove the same amount of rows to both front panels before you begin the neckline shaping. Take into account the yardage requirement listed above will change.

  • This cardigan is stretchy! It will stretch a few inches longer than the length listed above with the weight of being worn.

  • Your decreases start on a different row for both front panels.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for seaming last row of sleeve to your front/back panels.

Assembly-

Block your panels to the measurements listed above. I prefer to steam block mine but you can use the method of your choice.

Place your front and back panels together, RS facing. Using your preferred seaming method attach the first front panel to the back panel at the shoulder (I used my hook and slip stitched across). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches. Repeat the same process with the second front panel.

Next, using the same joining process as above, we will be attaching the sleeves. Make sure the center of the sleeve is aligned with the shoulder seam. Be sure to check that your sleeves are even on both the front and back panel as you go. It is helpful to use SM’s here to keep your sleeve in place as you join.

Finally, fold your cardigan so that the back and front panels are on top of each other, RS facing. Seam from the end of the sleeve to the underarm and down the side of the top. I left about 6” unseamed on both sides to create the side slit.

Optional- roll the sleeves and add a small stitch at the seam to hold in place.

Trim-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom inner corner of the Left Front Panel (right when worn). Ch 1, work Sc Sts evenly up the side of the front panel, along the back neckline and back down the second front panel. When you reach the corner, fasten off. Stitch count is not crucial here, just keep your Sts evenly spaced.

Weave in any remaining ends.
