The Daisy Day Tote Crochet Pattern

It’s been a long time coming… The Daisy Day Tote is finally here! You might recognize the cute little flowers from my previous pattern The Daisy Day Throw! I always knew I wanted to expand this collection and a large tote is what came next! Maybe there will be a Daisy Day Rug down the road??

The Daisy Day Tote Is made in 2 separate panels from the bottom up. You will also be making 2 straps. Then you will sew together! When you work the main panels of the bag you will be carrying Color A and Color B throughout. For mine, I crocheted directly over the yarn I was carrying to hide it. You will bring it up with you each row. If you aren’t familiar on how to carry yarn along in color work be sure to check out the video tutorial! For Color C, you will not carry it. Simply leave Color C where it is at and when you come back to it in the next row, just pick it up again. Only the center of the flower uses Color C so we don’t need to carry it. Once the center of one is finished just cut Color C and move to the next flower center.

The straps are made using thermal stitch which makes them extra sturdy! Be sure when you sew the straps to the bag that you place them far enough down on the inside of the tote before seaming. This keeps everything nice and secure.

If you plan on purchasing yarn, I recommend checking out the Lion Brand kit! The kit comes with all the yarn you need to make your Daisy Day Tote plus a FREE copy of the printable PDF pattern! You can even customize your yarn colors.

I know a lot of people like to sew liners in their crochet bags which would definitely work for this one! I have no sewing experience or advice on that. However, I found the PERFECT bag insert for this tote, which you can find here. It keeps everything on the inside organized plus has a firm bottom to give the bag extra shape! I purchased the size Large in beige. So if you are like me and not sure how to work a sewing machine, be sure to check it out!

Notes:

  • You will be making 2 identical panels from the bottom up. The straps are made separately and added last.

  • The chart is read starting from left to right (WS, odd rows) then right to left (RS, even rows). Your first St of Row 1 is Row 1, Stitch 7 of the chart. You will extend the sides of your panel in Row 7 with 6 Fsc on both sides. This creates the bottom shape of the bag and reflects the shaping on the graph.

  • You will be carrying and crocheting over colors A and B. Do not carry color C. For Color C just drop the yarn and leave it so that you can pick it back up in the next row.

  • Each square on the chart counts as 1 Sc.

  • The Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

  • You will need to know how to do a Foundation Single Crochet for Row 7. See video link below on how.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for seaming down the side.

Straps (make 2)-

Ch 9 (leave a long starting tail to use for sewing later)
Row 1: 1 Sc (BLO) in the second Ch from the hook and across, turn. (8 Sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, insert your hook into the BLO of the first St plus the BLO of the St from the row below and work 1 Sc, continue working Sc Sts across the row, putting your hook in the BLO of the current row and the BLO of the row below, turn. (8 Sc)
Repeat Row 2 until you strap reaches approximately 24”
Final Row: Ch 1, insert your hook under both the front and back loop of the first St, plus the BLO of the row below, work a Sc. Continue working Sc Sts across the row, putting your hook under both the front and back loop of the current St and the BLO of the St in the row below. Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing the strap to your bag.

Join Panels-

Place both panels of your bag together, RS facing. Using your needle and yarn tails, sew the sides of your bag together (Rows 7-50). Next, sew the bottom of Row 1 of both panels together. View diagram below. Next, we are going to sew the bottom corners together. Open up each corner of the bag and line up the side seam with the bottom seam. Sandwich together and sew across to close. View photo below.

Add Trim-

With your bag now RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the top of the bag, into the St directly to the left of one of the side seams. Ch 1, work 1 Sc into the same St and into each St around. Sl St to the first St made to join. Fasten off. (124 Sc)

Sew Straps-

With your bag WS out, place your first strap approximately 4.5” in on both sides of the first panel. You will want to overlap your strap edges and bag about 3” from the top of bag. This helps keep the bag extra sturdy and secure. Make sure both sides of the strap are lined up evenly before you begin sewing. Be sure to not twist straps. You can use stitch markers to hold in place if needed. Sew both ends of the strap down on all 4 sides, using your stitch of choice. Repeat on other side of bag, making sure your second strap is even with the first strap.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
