The Sailor Cardigan Crochet Pattern

You already know I had to make ONE more summer design before the chilly weather arrives. The great thing about The Sailor Cardigan is that it’s perfect for layering! Toss it on while in the office or better yet, while relaxing out on a boat in the ocean with the cool breeze blowing in your hair…one can dream right?!

My favorite thing about The Sailor Cardigan is that it is made from side to side! It only requires one tiny section of seaming on each side of the cardigan. The vertical rows give it a really pretty striped look. The sleeves are super oversized, they remind me of a sail! See what I did there? haha!

If you are a beginner and need a little extra help or you just prefer a visual, be sure to check out my video tutorial on YouTube! I’ll walk you through step by step on how to crochet your Sailor Cardigan.

Pattern:

Row 1: 156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196)  Fsc, turn. Alternatively, you can Ch 1 more than the number listed above and work 1 Sc in the second Ch from the hook and across for the required St count. (156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196) Sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in first St, *Sk the next St, 1 Hdc in following St, go back and work 1 Hdc around the post of the previous Hdc*, repeat from * to * across row until 1 St remains, 1 Hdc in last St, turn. (156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196) Hdc)

Row 3: Ch 2, 1 Dc in first, 1 Sc (BLO) in next, *1 Dc (BLO), 1 Sc (BLO)* repeat from * to * across row until 1 St remains, 1 Sc in last, turn. (156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196) Sts)

Rows 4&5: Ch 2, *1 Dc, 1 Sc* repeat from * to * across row, turn.

Rows 6-25(29, 33, 33, 37, 41, 41, 45, 45): Repeat Rows 2-5.

Shaping the neckline-

For the following Row, we will only be working halfway across and leaving the remaining stitches unworked. This will shape the back and the neckline area.

Row 26(30, 34, 34, 38, 42, 42, 46, 46): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in first St, *Sk the next St, 1 Hdc in following St, go back and work 1 Hdc around the post of the previous Hdc*, repeat from * to * across row for a total of 77(79, 81, 85, 87, 89, 93, 95, 97) Sts, 1 Hdc in next St, leave remaining Sts unworked, turn. (78(80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 94, 96, 98) Hdc)

Rows 27(31, 35, 35, 39, 43, 43, 47, 47)-29(33, 37, 37, 41, 45, 45, 49, 49): Repeat Rows 3-5. (78(80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 94, 96, 98) Sts)

Rows 30(34, 38, 38, 42, 46, 46, 50, 50)-38(42, 46, 46, 50, 54, 54, 58, 58): Repeat Rows 2-5. You will end on a Row 2 Repeat.

You will now be extending the following row out to create the second front panel of the cardigan. I recommend working your Sts into the back bump of the Chs.

Row 39(43, 47, 47, 51, 55, 55, 59, 59): Ch 80(82, 84, 88, 90, 92, 96, 98, 100) 1 Dc in the 3rd Ch from the hook, 1 Sc in next, *1 Dc, 1 Sc* repeat from * to * across, when you reach the main body of the cardigan (you should have 78(80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 94, 96, 98) Sts so far), work 1 Dc into the first St, *1Sc (BLO), 1 Dc (BLO)* repeat from * to * across row until 1 St remains, 1 Sc in last, turn. (156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196) Sts)

Rows 40(44, 48, 48, 52, 56, 56, 60, 60)& 41(45, 49, 49, 53, 57, 57, 61, 61): Repeat Rows 4 & 5.

Rows 42(46, 50, 50, 54, 58, 58, 62, 62)-62(70, 78, 78, 86, 94, 94, 102, 102) : Repeat Rows 2-5. You will end on a Row 2 repeat.

Row 63(71, 79, 79, 87, 95, 95, 103, 103): Ch 1, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across, turn. (156(160, 164, 172, 176, 180, 188, 192, 196) Sc)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for seaming.

Measure Armholes and Sew Sides-

Block your cardigan to the measurements listed above. I like to steam block mine.

Fold your cardigan together, RS facing. Measure 12(12, 12, 12, 12.25, 12.25, 12.5, 12.5, 12.5)” from the shoulder down the side of the cardigan. Place a SM through both the front and back panel to mark your spot. This will be left un-seamed for the sleeves. Sew from the bottom hem of the cardigan up the side until you reach the SM. You can use your preferred seaming method here. You can Sl St up the side with your hook or sew with a needle, either way works! Fasten off and repeat on the other side.

Sleeves-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom of the armhole at the side seam.

Round 1: Ch 2, 1 Dc in same spot where you joined, Dc in each St around the opening, Sl St to the first Dc to join, TURN. (Note- exact St count is not crucial here.)

Rounds 2-6: Ch 2, 1 Dc in each St around, Sl St to join, turn.

Fasten off, repeat on other side. Fold your sleeve into a cuff. You can add a stitch under the fold to help hold it in place or keep it as is so you have the option to not have a cuff.

Trim-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the corner at the bottom of the left front panel (right when worn). Your St count is not crucial here. Just try to keep your Sts evenly spaced when you work your way across the bottom in the last row.

Row 1: Ch 2, 1 Dc (BLO) in each St up the side of the cardigan, when you reach the back neckline, work Dc Sts evenly across (into the ends of the rows), continue down the side working 1 Dc (BLO) in each St until you reach the bottom corner, turn.

Row 2: Ch1, 1 Sc (FLO) in each St up the side of the first panel, along the back neckline and down the other side, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St up the side of the first panel, along the back neckline and down the other side, when you reach the corner of the front panel of the cardigan, do not turn, continue working Sc Sts evenly along the bottom of the cardigan, working all the way across. When you reach the first Sc of the row, Sl St to join.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
