It’s finally time for my last crochet design of the year, The Arctic Jewel Throw! I’m very excited to share this blanket pattern with you guys and I hope you love it just as much as I do!
I was vacuuming my dining room rug one day and instantly got inspired for this project! My rug has different textures where the design is fluffier and sticks out more than the main portion of it. I tried different stitches to achieve a similar look and finally settled on doing a loop stitch. I knew I wanted to do this blanket in Hdc so I ended up altering your typical single crochet loop stitch into a Hdc Loop St. It worked out perfectly after some swatching and I went right into designing what I wanted the blanket to look like.
The Hdc loop St in this blanket takes a tiny bit of practice but I know you can do it! Take a look at my video tutorial where I show you exactly what you need to do! Once you have that stitch down the only other stitches you will be doing are regular Hdc and a small bobble! You do need to know how to change colors at the end of a row, as well as mid row. I show this in my video too!
The best way to make this blanket is to separate your CC (contrasting color- stucco) into multiple balls. That way, you don’t have to cut and join your yarn a million times. You don’t need to worry about doing this until you reach the vertical stripes and diamond portion of the blanket. Once you reach this area you will use 7 separate balls of the brown color. Do not cut and join these, simply work your stitches needed, then drop the color and leave it there for when you need it in the next row, then just pick back up!
You will only be carrying the white yarn as you go, and working your stitches over it in the vertical stripes and diamonds section. Do not carry your brown yarn. Make sure you crochet over the white yarn so that it is hidden and you have no floats. Again, I go over all of this in my video tutorial!
I have charts available for this design! Right after the written pattern you will find a link to the 1 page chart which is good to use digitally where you can zoom in and see. If you are printing, I recommend using the 6 page chart so you can see easier!
I used Lion Brands Let’s Get Cozy Chenille Appeal yarn for The Arctic Jewel Throw. It’s soooo soft! You can find it available as a kit with Lion Brand. Materials:
Worsted (4) Weight Yarn, Lion Brand Lets Get Cozy Chenille Appeal in Coconut Milk (4 skeins/1075 yards) and Stucco (3 skeins/800 yards)
H/5.00mm Crochet Hook
Needle
Scissors
Gauge:
13 Hdc by 11 rows= 4×4”
Finished Measurements:
43” W, 56” L
Notes:
This blanket is worked in rows from the bottom up.
Color A uses all Hdc Sts. Color B uses Bobbles, Loop Sts and Hdc Sts.
When the letter A or B is referenced after a number, that stands for the amount of Sts in that color. For example 10A Hdc= 10 Hdc Sts in color A.
The Ch 1 does not count as a St.
I recommend separating out different balls of Color B for the rows where you will be changing colors frequently (the vertical stripes and diamonds). You will leave these attached instead of cutting and joining with each new stripe. I used bobbins but you can use dowels, clothespins or simply wind into a ball.
You will carry Color A with you while switching colors (starting in Row 30) and working your Sts over the yarn, instead of cutting and joining. You will not carry color B, simply leave that individual ball there so you can pick it back up once you work your way back to it.
There are 2 charts provided below. One is the full sized version. The second one is the same chart but broken into 6 individual pages to allow for a better view.
