The Bonfire Beach Hoodie

Coming at ya on the first weekend of spring… The Bonfire Beach Hoodie! You might be thinking that this design looks a little bit familiar. Well it should because it’s the sister design to The Happy At Home Hoodie!

The Bonfire Beach Hoodie is shorter and lighter in comparison to The Happy At Home Hoodie. It’s also not quite as oversized. I use the same stitches and the same basic construction for this top.

I left side slits on my Bonfire Beach Hoodie but you can easily sew those up when making your top if you would rather not have them!

You can find this pattern as a full video tutorial on my YouTube channel as well! It is split into 4 parts and walks you through the entire pattern.

Description: The Bonfire Beach Hoodie is perfect to throw on during a warm summer day. It uses Hdc throughout for an easy make. The slightly oversized boxy fit makes it extra comfy to wear all day.

Notes:

  • The Bonfire Beach Hoodie is worked from the bottom up in 2 separate panels. The sleeves are worked top down in the round. The hood is added last.

  • The Ch 1 does not count as a St.

  • For a longer top, add as many rows as desired to the back panel. Add the same amount of rows to the front panel just before the “Split neckline” section. Take into account the extra yarn needed.

  • If you prefer your top to not have side slits, just seam them up when you are joining your panels.

  • It is normal for your ribbing to be not as wide as the main body of the panel. Your top will widen out as you add rows.

Tie off, leave a long tail for seaming shoulder.

Join Shoulders-

Place your front and back panel together, right sides facing. Use the tail of yarn from the front panel to Sl St the first shoulder together, working through both the front and back panel. Repeat on other shoulder. Be sure your stitches are lined up correctly and that you aren’t skipping any as you go. You can also use a yarn needle and mattress stitch across if you prefer.

Join Sides-

Next, we will be seaming the sides of the top together, leaving holes on both sides for the sleeves. Place your top in front of you, right sides still facing. Using your measuring tape, measure from the shoulder seam down the side of your top a total of 6.5(7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5)”, place a SM. Repeat on other side. Make sure your SM was placed on the same row on both sides.

Join yarn with a Sl St to first row of the main body of the top, just above the ribbing. (Note- If you don’t want the side slits, join yarn at bottom of ribbing instead.) Sl St evenly up the side of the top, making sure that your rows on both panels are aligned correctly. Tie off when you reach the SM, leaving the arm opening unworked. Repeat on other side.

Sleeves-

With your top right side out, join your yarn with a Sl St to the bottom of the arm opening to the left of the side seam. Note- Stitch count is not crucial here. You will be working your stitches evenly around the arm opening. Your stitches will be worked into the sides of the panel rows. If your sleeve starts looking wavy you have too many stitches, if your sleeve starts to pucker, you have too few stitches. Be sure to work the same amount of stitches on both sleeves.

Round 1: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in same space, Hdc evenly around the arm hole, join to the first Hdc with a Sl St, TURN.

Rounds 2-6: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St around, join to the first Hdc with a Sl St, turn.

Tie off, repeat on other side.

Neckline Trim-

With your top still right side facing out, join yarn with a Sl St at the right side of the neckline at Row 46(46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60) (view photo 1). Ch 1, work Sc stitches evenly spaced down the side of the neckline, across the 2 empty Sts at the bottom and back up the opposite side of the neckline. Note- St count is not crucial here, just try and make the same amount of Sts on both sides. You will now be at Row 46(46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60) on the opposite side from where you joined. Do not turn or tie off.

Row 2: Ch 1,1 Hdc in each St across, turn. (80 Hdc)

Row 3: Ch 1, 38 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 38 Hdc, turn. (82 Hdc)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Row 5: Ch 1, 39 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 39 Hdc, turn. (84 Hdc)

Row 6: Repeat Row 2.

Row 7: Ch 1, 40 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 40 Hdc, turn. (86 Hdc)

Row 8: Repeat Row 2.

Row 9: Ch 1, 41 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 41 Hdc, turn. (88 Hdc)

Row 10: Repeat Row 2.

Row 11: Ch 1, 42 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 42 Hdc, turn. (90 Hdc)

Row 12: Repeat Row 2.

Row 13: Ch 1, 43 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 43 Hdc, turn. (92 Hdc)

Row 14: Repeat Row 2.

Row 15: Ch 1, 44 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 44 Hdc, turn. (94 Hdc)

Row 16: Repeat Row 2.

Row 17: Ch 1, 45 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 45 Hdc, turn. (96 Hdc)

Row 18: Repeat Row 2.

Row 19: Ch 1, 46 Hdc, inc, 2 Hdc, inc, 46 Hdc, turn. (98 Hdc)

Rows 20-46: Repeat Row 2.

Do not tie off. Turn your hood inside out and Sl St the last row together to join. (Join St 1 to 98, 2 to 97 etc. all the way across, view photo 2) Tie off.

Hood Trim-

With your top right side out, join yarn with a Sl St to Row 1 of your hood on the lefthand side.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 125 Sc stitches evenly around hood opening until you reach the opposite side of Row 1, turn. (125 sc)

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St across, turn.

Tie off, leave a long tail (approximately 36”) for sewing.

Cord-

Ch 301, 1 Sl St in second Ch from hook and each Ch across. (300 Sl St)

Tie off.

Sew Trim/ Thread Cord-

Fold the hood trim over onto the outside of your hood. (Note- lay your cord down now and work the seam “over” it so you don’t have to thread it in later. Make sure you don’t catch the cord with your needle. View photo 3.) Using the long tail and needle, stitch row 6 of the trim to the outside of your hood, creating a tube. Thread/move up the cord as you go.

Weave in all ends.
