The Whimsy Satchel Crochet Pattern

It’s been a while since I’ve made a crochet bag. The Whimsy Satchel is definitely a new favorite of mine! It’s perfect for quick trips out when you don’t want to carry a ton of stuff. It also works up super quickly!

I used a new yarn from Lion Brand called “Just Hemp”. This is a sturdy bulky weight yarn. It’s definitely the type of yarn I would recommend for bags/placemats/baskets over garments and blankets!

The Whimsy Satchel is worked almost entirely in one piece. You will start in the center of the front flap and make your half circle in rows. The front flap, top, back, bottom and front panel are all worked in one piece. The strap and sides are worked in one piece as well and then everything is sewn together. Make sure you check out the available photos if you get confused!

Joining Sides and Strap Trim-

Fold your bag together, RS out (view Photo 4). You should still be attached to the bottom of your bag at row 30 where you joined your strap. Now we will be attaching the first side of the bag by single crocheting on the outside of the bag through both the back and side panel. Be sure to line up the side panel evenly with the front and back panel so that the rows are aligned. Use stitch markers to hold it in place if necessary. Working through the back side of the bag and the side panel/strap, Sc the next 23 rows to join (Rows 148-170 of the strap and Rows 7-29 of the bag, view photo 5). When you reach Row 7 of the bag you will no longer need to work through both to join. Continue working 1 Sc into the end of each row of the strap. Work your way across the strap until you get to the opposite side of the bag. Now, you will need to attach this side of the side panel/strap with the other side of the back panel of the bag. Work through both and continue joining with Sc rows 1-23 of the strap and Rows 7-29 of the bag (view Photo 6). Tie off. You will need to repeat this same process on the other side of the strap/bag (view Photo 7).

The Whimsy Satchel

Lay your closed bag out in front of you, RS up. Join yarn to the bottom right corner of the bag. Join the side of the strap to the side of the front panel of the bag by single crocheting up the side and continuing by single crocheting along the edge of the strap. When you get to the opposite side, join by single crocheting through both the strap and the bag. Tie off when you reach the bottom left corner.

Weave in all ends.
