I’ve been so excited to try the “Scarfie Lite” yarn from Lion Brand for months! I knew I had to wait until I had the perfect project idea. What could be better than my annual hat/scarf set! The Boxy Blooms Bonnet Set ended up working perfectly with it.
Bonnets are so “in” this year. Funny enough, I have a bonnet style hat that I released a couple years ago, The Stonebridge Set. I love the look and fit of it so I knew a Boxy Blooms Bonnet was meant to be. And it wouldn’t be complete without a long and cozy scarf, would it?!
If you stay up to date on my pattern releases than I’m sure you know about The Boxy Blooms Cardigan, pullover and blanket! The set is another addition to the family. It has the same pretty stitch repeat throughout. It’s so fun to do and easy to memorize. Especially after a few rows into the scarf! Of course I have a full video tutorial linked below if you are a beginner.
This set only needs 2 skeins of the Scarfie Lite yarn. Be aware, I used almost a full 2 skeins so I would hold off on making the pompoms as well as adding anything extra to the scarf (fringe, added length etc.) until you make both pieces! That way you don’t run out of yarn if you do a few too many “wraps” in your pom.
The Boxy Blooms Bonnet Set is a matching bonnet and scarf duo that combines comfort and style. Worked in colorful yarn, this set brings a touch of whimsy to chilly days. The trendy bonnet-style hat features a playful pompom on top and two tie strings with mini pompoms at the ends, while the coordinating scarf adds extra warmth and flair. A full video tutorial is included to guide you every step of the way.
Materials:
Worsted (4) Weight Yarn, Lion Brand Scarfie Lite in Tartan, 2 skeins, 685 Yards
J/6.00mm Crochet Hook
Needle
Scissors
Small Pompom Maker
Medium Pompom Maker
Gauge:
14 Sts by 7 Rows= 4×4”
To make a gauge swatch, follow the scarf instructions for 10 Rows. Your swatch will be larger than the required gauge. Measure 4×4” within your swatch to check gauge.
Sizes:
One size only, fits the average woman’s head
Finished Measurements:
Scarf- 9.5” W by 70” L
Bonnet- 9.75” W by 10” T
Notes:
The Ch’s within the rows go towards your St count.
The Ch 3 at the start of the rows count as 1 Dc.
The Ch 4 at the start of the row counts as 1 Dc + 1 Ch.
The Ch 5 at the start of the rows count as 1 Dc + 2 Chs.
The Ch 6 at the start of the row counts as 1 Dc + 3 Chs.
When pattern instructs to work “in St from 2 rows below”, you will work your Dc around the Ch 3 from the previous row, with your St worked into the center St from the row before it. When you pull up your loop, pull it up a bit higher than normal to your current row, so that your St isn’t too tight.
I recommend making the pompoms until after you’ve finished the hat and scarf. Since pompom size and wrapping style can vary, waiting until the end ensures you’ll have enough yarn to complete your set before making the finishing touches.
Puff- *YO, insert hook in St, YO, pull up a loop* repeat from * to * 3 more times (9 loops on hook), YO, pull through 8 loops on hook, YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook.

Fasten off, leave a long tail to sew shut.
Using your needle and tail of yarn, insert the needle in the top of the first stitch, from the outside to the inside of the hole. Repeat through each of the remaining 11 Sts around. Pull the tail tight to cinch up the hole. Seam the tail back and fourth a couple of times to securely close.
Ties and Pompoms-
Ch 62. With your beanie RS out and the back slit facing up, join yarn with a Sc into the corner St at the bottom of the ribbing on the left hand side. Sc evenly up the first side of the slit. When you reach the top, place the overlapping Sts on top of each other and work a Sc through both sides to secure. Continue down the other side until you reach the bottom of the ribbing (exact St count here is not crucial). Ch 63 and turn. 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each remaining Ch until you reach the ribbing for a total of 62 Sl St. Continue working 1 Sl St in each Sc St along the slit of the beanie. When you reach the second set of Chs, continue with 1 Sl St into each Ch to the end. Fasten off.
Make and sew 1 small pompom to the end of each tie. Make a 3rd pompom and sew to the top of the beanie.
