The Stonebridge Set Crochet Pattern

I can’t believe it’s already November and cold enough for my annual Beanie and Mitt set! Last winter I released The Winter Moonlight Set and this year is The Stonebridge Set crochet pattern!

I wanted to do something a little bit different than your typical beanie. I decided to construct it in more of a “bonnet” style and add a tie with little poms on the ends! You’ll start the beanie by creating the ribbing in rows, then crocheting your first row into the sides of the ribbing rows made. You’ll continue the first several rows back and fourth before joining the piece together and crocheting the remaining beanie in joined and turned rounds. Don’t forget the turn! It’s very important to do so within the pattern.

The fingerless mitts uses the same stitches but worked up slightly different. The ribbing is made the same as the beanie but you will immediately join together and worked in turned rounds throughout the entirety of the main body of the mitt. Take note of the thumb hole round! This will be slightly different for the left vs. the right mitt. Other than that, both left and right will be the same!

I used worsted (4) weight yarn for this set. The main color A is Lion Brand Skein Tones in “Ivory or Basic Stitch Anti-pilling in “ecru” (these are the same colors and either one will work) and Color B is Ferris Wheel in “Morning Java”. If you want your fingerless mitts to have the same color stripes, be sure to start on the same color within the ferris wheel skein. You’ll have to pull the yarn out and cut so you can start at the same point! Other than that, no need to worry about rearranging the colors as they stripe on there own! You can find this yarn in the Lion Brand kit along with a free copy of my PDF pattern!

When you are working in the round on the mitts, you do not need to cut and join yarn. I simply leave my yarn attached and pick it back up when I need to switch to it, creating a small “float” on the inside of the mitt. If you prefer to cut and join, you can do that as well. You will just have a few more ends to weave in later. You will have to cut the yarn while chaging colors in the beginning rows of the beanie. Once you start working in the round, no need to cut and you can just pick them up while switching colors just like the mitts.

There are a different ways you can change colors and is complete personal preference on which way you like best. I found that after I join with a sl st to the first st made and then turn, joining the new color in right after that and then making my starting Ch worked best and created a cleaner color change. For example, after round 1 of the mitt is complete, Sl St to first St to join, turn your work, switch to color B by placing it on your hook, pulling through and Chaining 1 to start the next round. Feel free to do it whichever way you normally do!

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing top of beanie shut. Using your needle, weave the tail through each of the outer loops of the Hdc stitches through the round below and pull tight to close.

Ties and Pompoms-

With Color A, Ch 62. With your beanie RS out and the back slit facing up, join yarn with a Sc into the corner St at the bottom of the ribbing on the left hand side. Sc evenly up the first side of the slit, continue down the other side until you reach the bottom of the ribbing (exact St count here is not crucial). Ch 63 and turn. 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each remaining Ch until you reach the ribbing for a total of 62 Sl St. Continue working 1 Sl St in each Sc St along the slit of the beanie. When you reach the second set of Chs, continue with 1 Sl St into each Ch to the end. Fasten off.

Make and sew 1 small pompom to the end of each tie. Make a 3rd pompom and sew to the top of the beanie. Weave in any remaining ends

Fingerless Mitts-

Leave your starting tail about 6” long so you can use it to sew the cuff together later on.

Rows 2-42: Ch 1, 1 Sl St (BLO) in each St across, turn. (8 Sl St) Do not turn or tie off after last row made.

Note: an easy way to identify how many rows you have is to count the “bumps” in multiples of 2 for a total of 42 rows, or, 21 “bumps”.

Fold your ribbing together and use your starting yarn tail to sew the first and last row together. Turn RS out so that the seam is on the inside.

You will now be working in turned rounds for the remainder of the mitt. You will be working Round 1 of the main body of the mitt into the ends of the ribbing rows. Your Sts will be working into the “bumps” around.
