The Cambrie Cropped Cape Crochet Pattern

A couple of years ago I designed my Woodlands Blanket Wrap. I fell in love (and you guys too!) with the cozy, oversized feel of wearing something that almost felt like a blanket. It quickly became one of those pieces you can throw on and instantly feel warm and comfortable.

But as I kept wearing it, I started imagining a version with a similar construction that felt a little more refined and tailored for everyday layering while you are out and about. That idea eventually turned into the Cambrie Cropped Cape!

I wanted to keep that same comforting, wrap-like feel while creating something a bit more polished and styled. The cropped length, arm openings, and delicate tie at the neckline give it a soft structure that makes it easy to layer over your favorite outfits. It has the coziness of a wrap, but with a silhouette that feels a little more put together. The stitches are repetitive and relaxing to work up. My favorite detail of the construction is that it is all one piece! So, that means no sewing and just a few inches on both sides that we slip stitch together.

I used Color Theory yarn for this one. It’s such a great worsted weight yarn. You should definitley try it out if you havent yet. It’s sooo soft, easy to work with and has the best color options! If you want to grab some yarn, check out my kit! It includes all the yarn you need plus you get a free pattern download.

The result is a piece that’s equal parts cozy and elegant, something you can wear around the house, out for a walk, or layered over a button-up or tee for a simple but timeless look.

Description: The Cambrie Cropped Cape, designed as a wearable wrap, drapes effortlessly over the shoulder with soft structure and deep arm openings that make it easy to style. A delicate tie at the neckline allows you to wear it closed or loosely open for a relaxed look. Inspired by vintage layering and classic silhouettes, the Cambrie pairs beautifully over a collared shirt, fitted tee or lightweight dress. It brings “grandma-chic” charm into a modern wearable piece. Perfect for transitional seasons and styled for everyday life. A full video tutorial is included to guide you through every step.

Left Front Panel (when worn)-

With your work RS up and your finished front panel on the right hand side, join yarn with a Sl St where your second SM is (37th(39th, 43rd, 47th, 51st) St). This side is slightly different with the neckline shaping rows. We will be starting the Dc rows with a Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc) instead of a Ch 2. Once you are finished with the increase rows you will go back to making normal Row 3 repeats.

Row 43(43, 47, 51, 55): Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc), 1 Dc in each remaining St across, turn. (37(39, 43, 47, 51) Dc)

Row 45(45, 49, 53, 57): Ch 3 (counts as 1 Dc), 2 more Dc in same St as the Ch 3, 1 Dc in each remaining St across, turn. (39(41, 45, 49, 53) Dc)

Row 46(46, 50, 54, 58): Repeat Row 44(44, 48, 52, 56). (39(41, 45, 49, 53) Sts)

Row 47(47, 51, 55, 59): Repeat Row 45(45, 49, 53, 57). (41(43, 47, 51, 55) Dc)

Row 48(48, 52, 56, 60): Repeat Row 44(44, 48, 52, 56). (41(43, 47, 51, 55) Sts)

Row 49(49, 53, 57, 61): Repeat Row 45(45, 49, 53, 57). (43(45, 49, 53, 57) Dc)

Row 50(50, 54, 58, 62): Repeat Row 44(44, 48, 52, 56). (43(45, 49, 53, 57) Sts)

Row 51(51, 55, 59, 63): Repeat Row 45(45, 49, 53, 57). (45(47, 51, 55, 59) Dc)

Rows 52(52, 56, 60, 64)-84(84, 92, 100, 108): Repeat Rows 2 & 3. Don’t forget to switch back to beginning the Row 3 repeats with a Ch 2 (does not count as a St) for the remainder of the panel. Your last row made is a Row 2 repeat.

Trim-

Do not fasten off or turn after your last row made. We will now be working the edging of the cape opening.

Row 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the front panel (approximately 3 Sc for every 2 rows), across the back neckline and down the side of the second front panel, stopping when you reach the opposite corner, turn. Note- St count is not crucial here, just try to evenly space your Sts working about 3 Sc for every 2 rows.

In the following row, we will be adding in the tie closure on both sides, right before we reach the last increase rows we made on the front panels.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St, stop just before you reach Row 51(51, 55, 59, 63) of the front panel, Ch 51, 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each Ch across, Sl St back into the same St you started from. Continue with 1 Sc in each St until you reach the same row on the opposite side. Ch 51, 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each Ch back down. Sl St back into the same St you started from. Continue with 1 Sc in each remaining St until you reach the bottom corner, finish with 3 Sc into the same St.

Do not turn or fasten off. We will now be working a Sc border around the remainder of the cape.

Continue working 1 Sc in each St along the bottom of the front panel, when you reach the corner, work 3 Sc into it. Sc evenly up the side of the cape until you reach the next corner, work 3 Sc into it, Sc evenly along the bottom of the back panel, work 3 Sc into the corner, Sc evenly up the side of the panels, 3 Sc into the corner, Sc along the bottom of the front panel. When you reach the corner, work 2 more Sc into the same spot as the first Sc made from the start of Row 2. Sl St to the first Sc made to join and fasten off.

Finishing Up-

Fold your cape together, RS facing. We will be closing off the arm openings by slip stitching the panels together. Measure from the top of the cape at the shoulder, down the side approximately 10(10, 11, 12, 13)”. Join yarn with a Sl St through both the front and back panel. Sl St together about 4”. Leave remaining Sts unworked. Repeat on other side. You can easily customize the size of the arm opening by joining in further down or higher up on the panel. You can also customize the size of the side slit by slip stitching more or less of the panels together.

Fasten off and weave in any remaining ends.
