The Hawthorn Hoodie Crochet Pattern

I might have a little obsession with hoodies. Especially cozy ones. And this one might be the coziest one yet. Meet The Hawthorn Hoodie!

This Hoodie uses a super soft yarn from Lion Brand called Let’s Get Cozy: Chenille Appeal! I loved working with this yarn and think the finished texture of The Hawthorn Hoodie is amazing! There are lots of pretty colors to pick from as well.

If you want your hoodie to be longer or shorter, you can easily add or remove rows on the front panel before shaping the neckline. Just make sure you add or remove the same amount of rows to the back panel as well. Don’t forget this will alter the amount of yarn required. You can also leave the pocket off the front as well although I think it ties this design together perfectly! My favorite part of The Hawthorn Hoodie is the oversized cozy hood.

You’ll be using Hdc stitch for most of this design so the panels work up quickly! This yarn has a fluffy texture but overall I found it easy to work with! I have 2 other hoodie patterns available that you might enjoy if you like this one. The Happy At Home Hoodie and The Bonfire Beach Hoodie. Be sure to check those out as well!

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing the last row to the back panel.

Left Shoulder (right when worn)-

Place your panel in front of you, RS up with the finished shoulder on the right hand side. Count 31(33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 50, 53) Sts in from the left towards the center of the panel and join yarn with a Sl St. There will be 2 Sts in the center of the panel left unworked.

Row 43(43, 45, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn. (31(33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 50, 53) Hdc)

Row 58(58, 60, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70): Repeat Row 54(54, 56, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66). (21(23, 26, 29, 32, 35, 38, 40, 43) Hdc)

Row 59(59, 61, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71): Repeat Row 55(55, 57, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65, 67). (20(22, 25, 28, 31, 34, 37, 39, 42) Hdc)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing the last row to the back panel.

Sleeves (make 2):

Row 1: 12 Fsc, turn. (12 Sc) Note- alternatively you can Ch 13, work 1 Sc into the second Ch from the hook and across for 12 Sc.

Rows 2-24(26, 26, 28, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32): Ch 1, 1 Sc (BLO) in each St across, turn.

Do not turn after the last row. You will now be working Row 1 of the main body of the sleeve panel into the ends of the ribbing rows.

Row 1: 2 Hdc into the end of each row across, turn. (48(52, 52, 56, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64) Hdc)

Note- your ribbing will look wavy and crazy at this point. Don’t worry, that’s normal! Your sleeve will start to straighten out as you go.

Rows 2-39(39, 39, 39, 39, 38, 38, 37, 37): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Note- This is an oversized drop-sleeve style hoodie. The wider the front/back panels are, the shorter the sleeve needs to be because they join further down your bicep. That’s why the smaller sizes have more rows than the larger. You an easily adjust your sleeve length by adding or taking away as many rows as desired before fastening off.

Fasten off, leave a long tail to seam last row to your front/back panel.

Pocket:

Row 1: 42(42, 42, 44, 44, 44, 46, 46, 46) Fhdc, turn. (42(42, 42, 44, 44, 44, 46, 46, 46) Hdc) Note- alternatively you can Ch 43(43, 43, 45, 45, 45, 47, 47, 47), work 1 Hdc in second Ch from the hook and across for 42(42, 42, 44, 44, 44, 46, 46, 46) Hdc.

Rows 2-9(9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11, 11): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 10(10, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12, 12): Ch 1, 1 Hdc, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in each across until 3 remain, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in last, turn. (40(40, 40, 42, 42, 42, 44, 44, 44) Hdc)

Row 11(11, 11, 12, 12, 12, 13, 13, 13): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Rows 12(12, 12, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 14)-19(19, 19, 20, 20, 20, 21, 21, 21): Repeat Row 10(10, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12, 12). Your St count will decrease by 2 with each row.

Row 20(20, 20, 21, 21, 21, 22, 22, 22): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across. (24(24, 24, 26, 26, 26, 28, 28, 28) Hdc)

Fasten off, leave a tail long enough to sew the last row to the front of the hoodie.

Joining Panels:

Block your panels to the measurements listed above if necessary. Place your back and front panel together, RS facing. Use the tail of yarn and your seaming method of choice to join the last row of the shoulder to the back panel. I like to use my crochet hook and Sl St to join. You can also use a needle and your preferred sewing stitch. Repeat on other shoulder.

Next, place your front and back panel (now joined) RS facing down. Line up the last row of your first sleeve so that the shoulder seam joining the front/back panels is directly in the center. I recommend placing a SM in the middle and both ends of the sleeve to hold its place. Make sure you have the same amount of Sts on both sides of the shoulder seam. Sl St with the tail of yarn to join or use your preferred joining method. Repeat on other side.

Finally, fold your hoodie together, RS facing. Use your preferred joining method to sew from sleeve cuff to underarm. Continue down from underarm to bottom hem. Repeat on other side.

Row 37: Ch 1, 1 Hdc, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in each St to end, turn. (39 Hdc)

Fasten off.

Opposite side of hood-

With the WS of the hood facing up, join yarn with a Sl St to the next unworked St of Row 35.

Row 36: Ch 1, 1 Hdc into same St and each remaining St across, turn. (40 Hdc)

Row 37: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St until 3 Sts remain, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in last St, turn. (39 Hdc)

Row 41: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across until 5 remain, 1 Sc in next 2 Sts, 1 Sl St in the next 2 Sts, leave last Sl St unworked. (31 Hdc, 2 Sc, 2 Sl St)

Fasten off.

Seam Hood-

Fold your hood in half and seam Row 41 together. You can use a needle or Sl St together using your hook. Make sure you seam all the way across including the decrease/shaping rows. Be sure your Sts are aligned on both sides of the hood.

Add Trim-

With your hoodie RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to Row 1 on the left side of the hood.

Row 1: Ch 1, 1 Hdc into the end of each row of the hood, turn. (82 Hdc) Note- St count is not crucial here so if you find you need to adjust the St count by a couple feel free to do so.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for seaming trim closed.

Drawstring-

Crochet a starting Ch approximately 64” long. Sl St into the second Ch from the hook and in each Ch across to create the cord. The length will decrease by a few inches after you work the Sl St. You can adjust the length if you prefer your drawstring longer or shorter. Fasten off.

Sew Hood Trim/ Thread drawstring-

Fold the hood trim over onto the outside of your hood. Use the tail of yarn and a needle to sew Row 4 to Row 1 of the trim, creating a tube. After you work a few stitches, thread your cord in and continue to sew “over” it, pulling it through and moving it up as you go. That way you can avoid threading it through later. Make sure you take extra card to not accidentally put your needle in the drawstring and snag it.

Sew Pocket-

Place your pocket onto the front panel of your hoodie. Line Row 1 of the pocket up with the ribbing. Center it in the middle so it is even on both sides. I recommend pinning it into place so it doesn’t move as you sew. Using the tail of yarn from the final row, sew across the top of the pocket. Using a new piece of yarn, sew the edges of Rows 1-9(9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11, 11), across the bottom of Row 1, and up the other side of Rows 1-9(9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11, 11). Leave the decrease rows unworked for the pocket openings.

Weave in all ends.
