The Wendy Cardigan Crochet Pattern

I love the soft romantic vibes that The Wendy Cardigan gives. Somebody suggested the name Wendy for it on my name contest because it reminded them of Peter Pan and I totally see it. 🙂 It’s light weight and made of soft cotton which makes it perfect for warm weather. I’m excited to pair mine over sundresses this summer!

The Wendy Cardigan is worked from the bottom up in 3 separate panels. You can easily adjust the length of your cardigan by adding or taking away rows before you begin to decrease on the front panels. Make sure you adjust the same amount of rows on the back panel as well. I think this cardigan would look SO cute cropped. If you make a cropped version I would love to see it!

The stitch used in this cardigan is very similar to the classic V stitch but it does not have the Ch 1 in between the 2 Dc stitches. This is a great pattern to make and not have to use much brain power on the stitches! It’s just Dc stitches across the row, working them in between the 2 Dc from the previous row!

Notes:

  • This cardigan is worked from the bottom up in 3 separate panels.

  • The Ch 3 at the beginning of each row counts as 1 Dc.

  • You will be working your 2 Dc into the center space of the “V” from the row below, not into an actual stitch. The 2 Dc worked into the same St creates a “V”.  When instructed to work Sts into the center of the “V”, this refers to the space between those two Dc.

  • You will be working your last Dc of the row into the top of the turning Ch.

  • You can add or take away rows in multiples of 2 to adjust length to your preferred size. Make your adjustments on the back panel before tying off. Be sure to add or remove the same amount on both front panels just before you begin the neckline decreasing. Take note that this will alter the required yardage above.

Tie off, leave a tail approximately 12-18” to sew the last row of your front panel to your back panel.

Join Panels:

Block your panels to the measurements above. I found that a light steam block was enough. Place your front panels on your back panel, RS facing. Be sure to line up your panels evenly so that there is no bunching. Sew the last row of your front panels to your back panel using your method of choice. I like to use my hook and yarn tail to slip stitch across.

Next, we will be sewing the sides together, leaving an arm opening as well as a slit. The slit is optional and you can sew all the way to the bottom hem if preferred. Place your cardigan in front of you with RS still facing inwards. Use your measuring tape and measure out 6.5(7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5)” from the top shoulder seam, down. Place a SM through both panels to keep your spot marked. This will be your arm hole. Sew from just under the SM down the side of your cardigan. Make sure your panels and rows are even as you go. I left approximately 8” at the bottom of my cardigan to create the slit. Repeat on other side.

Sleeves-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the left of the underarm seam.

Round 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly around the arm hole opening. I worked 2 Sc into the ends of each of the rows around. Sl St to the first Sc made to join. Note- Exact St count is not crucial here, just be sure to work your Sts as evenly as possible and do the same amount on both sides.

Rounds 2-4: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St around, Sl St to join.

Tie off and repeat sleeve instructions on other arm hole.

Trim & Tie-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom inner corner of the left panel (right panel when worn).

Row 1: Ch 1, Sc evenly up the side of the first front panel working approximately 2 Sc stitches in the end of every row until you reach Row 49(49, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 59, 61) Ch 31, 1 Sl St in the 2nd Ch from the hook and each remaining Ch across for a total of 30 Sl St. Sc back into the side of the panel to join, continue working Sc stitches evenly up the neckline until you reach the back panel. 1 Sc in each St across the back panel. Sc evenly down the neckline on the second front panel. When you reach Row 49(49, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 59, 61), Ch 31 again. 1 Sl St in the second Ch from the hook and in each Ch across for a total of 30 Sl St. Sc back into the side of the panel to join, continue working Sc stitches evenly down until you reach the corner.

Tie off and weave in any ends.
