Traveling Afghan Knit Square 13

I’m sure you know by now all of the details on The Traveling Afghan project put together by Lion Brand but I’ll give you a quick rundown just in case! This year long project involves 49 different crochet and knit designers to bring you two beautiful blanket designs- one knit and one crochet. Each designer is contributing a unique 10X10″ knit or crochet square design and sharing the pattern free on their blog! Each square has a fun story behind it that represents this designers life in yarn. This project started in January of 2020 and will continue throughout the year. I’m so excited to be the traveling afghan knit square 13!

I love that there is both a knit and crochet version. So depending on your craft you can pick which one you want to do! Most of you know me as a crochet designer buuuuut SURPRISE! I designed a knit square not a crochet one. Shocker I know! lol. I actually tried to learn how to knit before I started crocheting!

If you don’t already have it- get the knit kit from Lion Brand here!

Or you can grab the crochet version!

If you prefer a low cost ad-free printable PDF you can grab it from my Ravelry shop ($1)

Let me tell you the story behind my square. Sean (my husband) and I have been together since high school. When I was in college I spent most of my free time working and wanted a hobby I could relax with at night. One of my coworkers would make the cutest little amigurumi and I wanted to learn how to make them sooo bad!

So what did I do? Went to my local Michaels and picked out some yarn (Lion Brand Thick & Quick) plus some random sized knitting needles that I thought looked right. hahaha. I was so clueless but it was my very first intro into the yarn world. Once I realized knitting with needles and crocheting with a hook were two totally different things I ended up getting a beginners knitting book. I pulled all of my stuff out and tried to learn how to cast on stitches. I sat there for hours and couldn’t get the hang of it.

Sean gave it a shot and figured it out before I did and we learned how to cast on together! I wasn’t sure what I was doing but I figured just doing a bunch of rows of the knit stitch would be easiest. Then I wanted to learn how to do the stockinette stitch because I was in love with the look of it. I ended up with alternating stripes of garter and stockinette stitch. I had about half a scarfs length of these stripes before giving up. Also, I dropped a couple of stitches and my tension was wonky but I was still proud of myself for trying!

Soon after this I would try crocheting and that just “clicked” in my head and is what I ended up excelling in. But I’ll always love telling the story of learning to knit and being introduced to yarn with Sean by my side! Little did I know then that it would turn into my biggest passion and my dream job!

My square is a representation of the very first stitches I practiced when Sean and I sat down to learn to knit! I hope you guys love the simplicity and the story behind it!
