The Morning Mug Cardigan

I’ve been wanting to design a longer style cardigan so that I can wear it over leggings for extra coziness. The Morning Mug Cardigan is long, with oversized cuffed sleeves and deep pockets!

The Fit- This cardigan is long and written with plenty of positive ease for a loose comfy fit. The stitch that I use in it is super stretchy. Once you work up your cardigan and put it on, it stretches another 6-8″ than what is listed in the chart below. The sleeves are extra long so that you can do a large cuff at the end. The large pockets are as wide as the front panel and are added last so you can always keep them off if you want to!

The Yarn- I used Lion Brand Pound Of Love for this design. I feel like this yarn doesn’t get the love it deserves. A lot of times, it is looked over for garments because the skein is SO big and you don’t think you need that much. For this cardigan you will use between 2-3 skeins depending on the size you make. It was actually really nice not having to join in a bunch of skeins while crocheting! It’s also a soft and sturdy yarn which holds up nicely. Another plus is all the color options that are available! I used Elephant Grey for mine but there is a bunch to choose from! Be sure to check out my kit, it comes with the yarn and a FREE copy of my printable pattern!

The How- This cardigan is worked in separate panels from the bottom up. You can easily adjust length by adding or removing the 8 row repeat on the back and front panels. Keep in mind the cardigan uses a stretchy stitch and will stretch down with the weight of the cardigan when worn! The chart below does not include the 6-8″ that the cardi will stretch. The sleeves are long and oversized so that you can cuff them. You will notice that the larger sizes have shorter sleeves. This is because it is a drop shoulder design! If you need to adjust sleeve length you can add or remove rows as well. The pockets are wide and deep. They are the width of your front panel with some decreases on one side. If you don’t want pockets just skip over the instructions and move on to the trim!

Rows 42-49: Repeat Rows 10-17.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing last row of sleeve to the front/back panels.

Note- This is an oversized drop-shoulder style cardigan. The wider the front/back panels are, the shorter the sleeve needs to be because they join further down your bicep. That’s why the smaller sizes have more rows than the larger. You an easily adjust your sleeve length by adding or taking away a pattern repeat of Rows 10-17. Don’t forget your cuffs are folded at the end so this is also an easy way to adjust the fit with a bigger or smaller cuff.

Pockets-

Left Panel Pocket (when worn)-

Fasten off. With your pocket WS up, join yarn with a Sl St to the top of Row 5 on the right hand side (same side as diagonal decrease rows). Work Hdc Sts evenly up the slanted side of the pocket until you reach Row 21. Work your last Hdc into the same St as the corner Hdc at Row 21. Sl St to join, fasten off. Your stitch count is not crucial here, just keep the stitches evenly spaced.

Join Panels-

Block your panels to the measurements listed above. I recommend a light steam block.

Place your front and back panels together RS facing.
Using your preferred seaming method attach the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders (I used my hook and slip stitched across through the outer loops only). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches.
Next, using the same joining process as above, we will be attaching the sleeves to the cardigan. Make sure the center of the sleeve is aligned

with the shoulder seam. Be sure to check that your sleeves are even on both the front and back panel as you go. It is helpful to use SM’s here to keep your sleeve in place as you join.
Finally, fold your cardigan so that the back and front panels are on top of each other, RS facing. Seam from the cuffs to the underarm and down the side of the cardigan. I joined mine using a sewing needle for this part.

Add Trim and Join Pockets-

With your cardigan RS out, place your pockets on top of the front panels lining up the bottom rows. Make sure they are even and facing RS up. Join yarn with a Sl St to the front right (when worn) panel and pocket at the bottom corner. Ch 1, work Sc Sts evenly up the side, making sure you are working your hook through both the front and pocket panels. Once you have attached the pocket along the side, continue up the remainder of the panel. Continue working Sc Sts evenly along the back neckline and down the second front panel. When you reach the second pocket, make sure you work your hook through both panels to join. When you reach the corner, fasten off. St Count is not crucial here, just try to keep your Sts even on both side and work approximately 2 Sc into the ends of each row and 1 Sc in each St along the back neckline.

If you did not make the pockets for your cardigan add the trim the same way, minus the pocket panel instructions.

Finally, you need to finish sewing both pocket panels on. Use your yarn tail or a new piece of yarn and sew along the bottom of the pocket, joining to the cardigan. I flipped this part inside out and sewed mine on the inside of the pocket. Next, sew the short side of the pocket to the cardigan. It should line up evenly with the side seam. Then, sew the top of the last row of the pocket to the cardigan, making sure your Hdc rows on both panels are lined up. Leave the slanted decrease rows open. Repeat on opposite pocket.

Weave in any remaining ends.
