The Teatime Cardigan Crochet Pattern

It’s Teatime! So obviously that means you need The Teatime Cardigan crochet pattern! This cardigan pattern gives all the cozy vibes. The Teatime cardigan features fun stripes using a unique blend of stitches, giving it a collegiate look. It has a slightly oversized fit with balloon style sleeves. There are so many color options to fit your style!

The construction of this cardigan is pretty beginner friendly. I do use a few different stitches for the stripes that you may have not used before but don’t be afraid! I have a full video tutorial on how to do these stitches if you need a little bit of extra help. They really are very simple to do once you get them down. The same stitch repeat is used on all of the panels.

One of the fun things about this cardigan is picking out the color combo that you want! There are so many options to do and I can’t wait to see what everyone picks! I used Color Theory yarn for my cardigan and I do have a kit available! You can customize the yarn colors if you purchase the kit. I have a couple of tips when working with stripes. When you change colors at the end of each row, you can crochet the next row directly over the tails of yarn for less ends to weave in! You can also crochet your trim directly over the tails of yarn. I like to tie my tails in a knot first before doing so.

Another great thing about The Teatime cardigan is the length is easy to adjust! You can simply add more rows to both the back and front panels if you want your cardigan longer. If you want it cropped, just remove rows. Do the same amount of rows to all 3 panels before fastening off.

If you like this cardigan then be sure to check out my others! I have so many that you would enjoy!

Notes:

  • This cardigan is made in separate panels from the bottom up.

  • The Ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

  • To change colors, do the last pull through of the final stitch with the new color at the end of the previous row.

  • The numbers in parenthesis at the beginning of the rows are your row count for all sizes.

  • The numbers in parenthesis at the end of the rows are your stitch counts for all sizes.

  • The numbers in parenthesis within the rows are your instructions for all sizes.

  • To make your cardigan longer, add as many rows as you want at the end of the back panel and both front panels. Be sure to add the same amount of rows to all 3. Take into account this will require more yarn than the yardage listed above.

  • If you don’t want pockets, just work 1 Hdc into each St across in row 19 instead of making a Ch 18.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing last row of front panels to the back panel. Note- This is an oversized drop-sleeve style cardigan. The wider the front/back panels are, the shorter the sleeve needs to be because they join further down your bicep. That’s why the smaller sizes have more rows than the larger. You an easily adjust your sleeve length by adding or taking away as many rows as desired before fastening off.

Pockets (make 2):

Row 1: 18 Fhdc, turn. Note- alternatively, you can Ch 19, work 1 Hdc in the second Ch from the hook and each Ch across for 18 Hdc.

Rows 2-16: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing pockets to cardigan.

Assembly:

Block your panels to the measurements listed above. I like to do a light steam block on mine but you can use your preferred method. Place your front and back panels together RS facing. Using your preferred seaming method attach the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders (I used my hook and slip stitched across). Be sure your panels are aligned and that you aren’t bunching or skipping stitches.

Next, using the same joining process as above, we will be attaching the sleeves to the cardigan. Make sure the center of the sleeve is aligned with the shoulder seam. Be sure to check that your sleeves are even on both the front and back panel as you go. It is helpful to use SM’s here to keep your sleeve in place as you join.

Finally, fold your cardigan so that the back and front panels are on top of each other, RS facing. Seam from the cuffs to the underarm and down the side of the cardigan.

Sew in pockets:

Now, you will be sewing your pockets to the inside of the front panels using a sewing needle. Place your pocket on the WS (inside) of the cardigan. Line it up so that the top of the pocket is aligned with the Ch 18 in row 19. You will be sewing the top of the pocket to the Ch 18. Continue sewing down the side of the pocket, across the bottom and back up the second side. I recommend using SM’s to hold your pocket in place. Make sure you don’t stick your needle all the way through to the front so that the seam is not visible on the outside. Don’t tug your stitches too tight. Be sure to view the video tutorial if you need a visual on how to sew the pocket. Tie off and repeat on other side.

Add Trim-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to the bottom corner of the left panel (right panel when worn). Make sure your tails of yarn at the ends of the rows are tied securely. You can crochet Row 1 directly over these tails so you have less ends to weave in.

Row 1: Ch 1, Hdc evenly up the side of the front panel, across the back neckline and down the side of the second front panel, turn. Note- Exact St count is not crucial here, just try to keep your Sts even.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 Hdc (FLO) in each St across.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
