The Winter Moonlight Set

I have to crochet a beanie and mitt/scarf set at least once a year. Making these cute little sets is definitely one of my favorite things to crochet! This year I decided to go with something solid and neutral colored. The Winter Moonlight Set has to be my new fave so far!

I new exactly what stitch I wanted to use for this set from the get go. I’ve only ever worked this stitch in rows so it was fun to design with it in the round and a bit of a challenge to figure out how I wanted to decrease it since technically there is no easy way to do that with this stitch repeat. I think it worked out beautifully though and I’m happy with the result. Both the mittens and the beanie are worked from the bottom up. You will begin with the ribbing before moving onto the main body of the pattern. Once you get past the ribbing you will be working the rounds in turned rounds. SO join with a Sl St, Ch 1 and don’t forget to TURN! Very important to the integrity of the stitch!

I used Lion Brand Color Theory yarn. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should! Lots of pretty colors and the texture is nice and soft. I used the color Moonbeam for mine but there are a bunch to chose from! You can check them out here. The Winter Moonlight Set is available as a kit with Lion Brand as well. You get all the yarn you need plus a free copy of the PDF digital download. Be sure to grab one for the best deal!

This set is designed to fit the average adult woman’s head and hands but if you want to make some adjustments for kids/teens then that’s pretty easy to do. Just remove ribbing rows in multiples of 3 compared to what is listed in the pattern below, until it’s the size you want. If you happen to need anything bigger just add rows to the ribbing in multiples of 3. If you need your mittens longer just add as many rounds as you want before beginning the decrease rounds. Same goes for the beanie, if you want it longer or shorter just add or remove rounds before decreasing.

If you like this set be sure to check out some of my others!

Notes:

  • Both the beanie and mittens are worked from the bottom up starting at the ribbing.

  • You will Sl St to join and TURN after every round.

  • You can easily make your beanie and mittens longer or shorter by adding or removing as many rounds as you want before you begin the decrease rounds. Take into account the yardage change if you adjust.

  • If you want to adjust the beanie for a smaller head remove ribbing rows in multiples of 3. The same applies for the mittens.

  • The mitten pattern is the exact same for both your left and right hand.

  • When you get to the main stitch/pattern repeat you will be working the [Sc, Hdc, Dc] all into the same Sc St. However, when you get to the decrease rounds the [Sc, Hdc, Dc] will not always be worked into the Sc from the round below.

  • Work your first [Sc, Hdc, Dc] of the round into the same Sc that you joined and chained 1 in.

  • To sew the top of your beanie/mittens closed, thread the tail through your needle and work it through the front/outer loops only all the way around. Pull tight to close and then thread the tail to the inside of your hat. Weave in and out of Sts a few times to secure.
